Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Renato Laranja! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Diego Sanchez! The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Emerson Jorge and Leandro Rodrigues.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Laranja dives in for a single leg takedown but Sanchez sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Sanchez circles away from the clinch attempt.
Laranja really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Laranja tries to clinch there but Sanchez circles away.
Sanchez swings for the body but Laranja moves out of range.
Sanchez keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Laranja tries to close the distance and clinch up but Sanchez swats him away and circles back towards the center. Sanchez rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Laranja moves out of range and avoids them all easily. As Sanchez backs away, Laranja returns fire with a leg kick that just misses. Sanchez misses with a body shot.
Sanchez's jab looks to have found its range, popping Laranja under the eye. Laranja wants to clinch. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sanchez ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Laranja moves away. Sanchez misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Laranja.
Laranja shoots in for a double leg but Sanchez sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Renato Laranja. That's going to take a lot out of him. Sanchez digs a good hook to Laranja's body.
Sanchez lands with an overhand left. Laranja definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. The fight stays on the outside here - Laranja looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sanchez scores with a nice head shot. Sanchez throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Laranja ducks right into an uppercut from Sanchez. A swing and a miss from Sanchez. A big left from Sanchez misses. Sanchez fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Laranja manages to avoid it. Sanchez throws out a powerful jab. The fight moves into the clinch position. Laranja's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Renato Laranja seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Laranja is trying hard to land a takedown here. Sanchez sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Sanchez scores with a jab. Laranja acknowledges it with a nod of the head. A swing and a miss from Sanchez. Laranja slips under a jab from Sanchez. Laranja darts in looking for a takedown but Sanchez gets double underhooks and turns Laranja into the cage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Sanchez throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
This has been an exciting period of action! Sanchez swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Sanchez lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected. Sanchez misses the shot to the body. Laranja gets in close and instigates a clinch. Laranja wants to break free but Sanchez has control.
Laranja is trying to break free. Laranja has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Sanchez uses from the top position. Sanchez must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Sanchez wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Laranja's closed guard. He's half up but Laranja has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Laranja pivots and extends the arm, Sanchez falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Laranja! Well done that man!
