PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Vaughn Peebles (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Melvin Mercy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Melvin Mercy told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Vaughn Peebles!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Melvin Mercy!
The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, Lou da Vinci and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
No joy there for Mercy, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Peebles blocks a head kick by Mercy.
Mercy scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Mercy throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Peebles seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
Peebles walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Peebles blocks a head kick by Mercy.
Mercy pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Peebles swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Peebles has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

Peebles drives through with a takedown into guard.
Mercy wants to get back to his feet but Peebles passes into half guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Mercy is trying to stand.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Peebles is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Mercy sees it coming and defends easily.
Mercy is looking to escape.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Peebles performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Mercy wants to stand back up but Peebles manages to pass into side control.
Mercy felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Peebles advances to full mount.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
You get the feeling that Mercy really doesn't like being in this position too much.
The referee warns Mercy that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Peebles is dominating on the ground here - he's now on his opponent's back, looking to sink in the hooks. Mercy is in real trouble.

Peebles is working the back position looking for the choke. Oh, he's slid into an armbar! Beautiful transition and Mercy taps out! Fantastic Jiu Jitsu from Peebles.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:46 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Vaughn Peebles!
Vaughn Peebles decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
