Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 8 - 0, fighting out of London, Rob Mills! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
13 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Nick Zal! The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, Alyssa Summers and Chad Campbell.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! No joy there for Zal, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Mills with a lazy takedown attempt and Zal counters with a two punch combo. Mills throws a series of strikes that have Zal backpedaling.
Mills shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Zal as he jumps to the side. Zal avoids a punch combination nicely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mills dives in and grabs Zal's left leg, looking for a takedown. Zal pushes down on Mills's head and hops out. Zal has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rob Mills. That's going to take a lot out of him. Mills moves into the clinch. Zal works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.

That's one minute gone in the round. Zal has Mills pressed against the cage, preventing Mills from circling away and getting back to striking at range. A short uppercut from Zal. Zal misses with a punch on the inside.
Both fighters working to control the clinch. Zal lands with a short head shot on the inside. Zal tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Mills's elbow. Mills wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. Mills lands a nice shot to the body. Mills tries a knee to the head but Zal blocks it.
Zal doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Mills jumps into guard, dragging Zal to the mat.
Mills avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Zal trying to control the position from guard on top but Mills is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Zal wants to pass the guard but Mills is keeping the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Zal trying to control but Mills is working from the bottom. Mills has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Mills wants to sweep here but Zal controlling him for the moment. Mills is adopting a defensive guard. Zal is trying to tuck his arms in to keep them safe but Mills has managed to isolate one of them and has got a loose triangle. Zal is looking to defend but Mills has done well to lock his legs together - this could be big trouble for Zal! Mills pulls down on the head and a little smile comes across his face - he knows he's got it. Yep, Zal taps out and this one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Rob Mills!
