Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
20 - 9 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sydney Jones! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
31 - 23 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Bobby Light! The judges for this bout are George Francis, Robert Twigg and Tiny Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Light takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Light looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it. Light shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Jones is trying to defend but Light finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Jones tries to roll over but Light keeps him under control. Light throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Light seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Jones does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Light is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Jones is not content to let Light control the position. Jones controlling the position well. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Light is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Light is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Jones has managed to free his arm - good work. Light slows the pace down in half guard. Light not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Light trying to pass the guard but Jones defending well. Light is thwarting Jones's attempts to control the position. Light is looking for a kimura here.
Jones regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Light. Light throws an elbow that misses. Jones uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Light's guard. Nice move by Jones!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Jones preventing the sweep. Light working a defensive guard here.
Light is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Jones is aware though and is defending well. Jones trying to control but Light is working from the bottom. Jones controlling from the top position. Light wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Jones is now in half guard. Still in half guard, Jones seems content to control.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Jones thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Light makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Light. Light is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Jones won't allow Light to sweep him here. Light looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Light escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Jones gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Jones has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Light has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Jones can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Bobby Light dominated that round. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!
Jones jabs Light right on the nose. Light blinks but takes it well. Light has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Jones finds it's way round the side to connect with Light's head. Jones connects with a good right hand that stumbles Light. Light circles away out of range and recomposes himself. A head kick misses from Light. Bobby Light is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Jones has Light up against the cage in a clinch.
Jones gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Light.
Jones lands a right hand that snaps the head of Light backwards. Jones avoiding damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Jones crunches a lovely knee into Light's ribcage. A short left from Jones. Light is breathing heavily. Jones misses with a knee strike.
Jones lands with a right to the head. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Jones lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Light or not. I was talking to Jones's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jones lands with a right to the head.
Light is rocked! Jones lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Light. Light is still on wobbly legs! Can Jones finish him? Jones tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked. Light seems to have recovered his senses. Jones is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Light can do to turn this around? Light is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Jones gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt. Jones scores with a nice hook to the head. Jones lands with a short shot to the head. Jones lands a left hand.
Jones creates some distance and fires off a vicious elbow that drops Light! He pounces and finishes the fight with more strikes! Nice KO for Jones.
