Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Johnny Williams! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Arthur Briggs! The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Taro Takaoka and Shirou Masuda.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Briggs displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Williams. Williams clinches up with Briggs and pushes him back against the ropes. Williams has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Briggs avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch. A quick uppercut on the inside from Williams. Williams connects with a knee to the head.
Williams tries to score a body lock takedown but Briggs shows good agility there to stay on his feet. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Johnny Williams. That's going to take a lot out of him. Williams throws a knee to the head but misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. A frustrated look appears on Briggs's face as he tries to break the clinch. Briggs is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Williams is defending well. Williams is working for takedown but Briggs is calmly controlling the position for now. Williams lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Briggs backwards.
That's one minute gone in the round. Williams breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Williams fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Williams gets in close and instigates a clinch. Williams pulls guard successfully.

Briggs is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Williams is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Williams has escaped and now he's on top! Williams trying to control the position from guard on top but Briggs is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Williams is really struggling to control Briggs but he's trying to hold on to the position. Williams tries to free his leg and advance position but Briggs is retaining full guard. Briggs is working an open guard so Williams takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Williams forces Briggs back against the ropes and clinches. Briggs is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Williams pulls him back up using the underhooks. Briggs looks winded! Williams stops a takedown attempt from Briggs.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Williams fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Williams pulls guard. Briggs won't allow Williams to get back to his feet. Williams has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Briggs off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds. Briggs has closed the distance and engaged Williams in a clinch.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Briggs working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though. Williams is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Williams keeping moving, preventing Briggs from controlling successfully. Williams looking to hit a scissor sweep but Briggs is one step ahead there.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Williams is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Briggs is aware though and is defending well. Williams looking for a sweep. Not yet Williams, not yet. Williams tries to strike from the bottom.
Williams lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard. Williams advances position into side control! The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Briggs trying to remain calm as Williams controls from the top position. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nice takedown defense from Briggs. No joy for Williams on that attempt. Williams moves in looking to clinch but Briggs pushes him off. Briggs shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Williams as he jumps to the side. Briggs misses with a takedown and Williams counters into the clinch. Nicely done. Williams breaks from the clinch.

Williams digs a good body shot into Briggs's ribs. Williams tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Briggs counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Williams is pressing down on Briggs's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Williams lands with a slapping head kick. Horrible takedown attempt by Williams or perhaps it was just good defense by Briggs, which made it look bad. Briggs gets tackled into the ropes by Williams. Williams maintains the clinch. Briggs gets control of Williams's arms and successfully pulls guard. Briggs will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back. Johnny Williams overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Williams tries to free his leg and advance position but Briggs is retaining full guard. Williams throws a strike but Briggs rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Williams is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Briggs is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Briggs in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Williams throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.

Johnny Williams dominated that second round. The cut man is working on Arthur Briggs's cut. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!
Briggs shoots in but no luck this time. Williams seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter. Johnny Williams seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Williams gets a clinch. Briggs goes for a takedown in the clinch but Williams prevents it.

Williams wants to get back to his feet but Briggs is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Williams has his foot on Briggs's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Briggs works his way back into a safe position though. Briggs takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Briggs working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Williams loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Williams not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Williams chips away with some ground and pound.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Williams content to stall in guard here. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Williams wants to control from the top but Briggs keeps moving.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Williams shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Briggs sprawls well. Briggs wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Williams gets slowly back to his feet. Williams fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Williams shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Briggs but Briggs pushes him off and we're back to square one. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Johnny Williams. That's going to take a lot out of him. Briggs fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Arthur Briggs has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Briggs tries to clinch there but Williams circles away.
Williams is looking for a counter combo. No joy there for Briggs, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
