PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Mathew Joyner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Quach Minh (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Minh has chosen beautiful life as his entrance music. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Mathew Joyner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Quach Minh!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Elvis Blanc and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Minh tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Joyner paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Joyner gets the takedown into side control.
Minh wants to get back to his feet but Joyner is dominant here and he's now got Minh's back!
Minh tries to break free.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Minh is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Joyner gets his way!
Minh tries to roll but Joyner sticks to his back.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Joyner struggling to land strikes to the head as Minh covers up.

Minh is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
Minh wants to control his opponent's hands but Joyner gets his hands free.

Joyner working for a choke but Minh is defending well.
Minh trying to get back to his feet but Joyner is in full control for now.

Joyner has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Minh has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Minh really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Joyner. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Minh is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.
Joyner will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Joyner gets his hands free as Minh looks to control.
I really don't envy Minh right now.
Minh looks winded!

Joyner is looking for the choke from the back position but Minh is controlling his hands well.

Minh just trying to survive but Joyner is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.

Joyner looks to land a left hand but Minh moved out of range nicely.
Minh tries to counter with a clinch but Joyner shakes him off and moves away.
Joyner throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.

Minh shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Joyner is trying to defend but Minh finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Joyner is trying to stand.
Joyner really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Joyner wants to control but Minh is keeping busy and won't allow it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Joyner scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Minh manages to mount him!
Joyner is trying to stand.
Minh trying to control but Joyner is having none of it.
Joyner is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Minh can do to turn this around?

Joyner wants to hold on but Minh pushes him away.
Minh takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Joyner regains half guard.
Joyner gets back to full guard.
Joyner wants to stand and escape but Minh is having none of it.

Joyner is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Minh is aware though and is defending well.
Joyner keeping moving, preventing Minh from controlling successfully.
Minh stops Joyner from standing up.

Minh trying to control but Joyner is working from the bottom.
Joyner is trying to control the position but Minh postures up.
Joyner wants to stand but Minh is controlling the position.

Joyner wriggles free and stands up.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Joyner misses with a hook.
Minh changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
A punch combination from Joyner misses.

Minh closes the distance and clinches.

Minh jumps guard.
Minh not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Minh wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Joyner manages to pass to side control.

Minh has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Joyner is on him like a limpet, forcing Minh back against the cage.
Minh creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.

Minh turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Minh manages to end up in side control.

Joyner throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Minh doesn't manage to clinch there - Joyner circles away.

Minh shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Joyner's guard.

Joyner wriggles free and stands up.
Joyner just misses with a punch to the body.
Minh lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Minh changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Joyner looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Joyner bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
Joyner closes this distance looking for a takedown but Minh circles away.
Joyner looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Minh fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Joyner to the ground. Minh is now in Joyner's guard.
Minh won't allow Joyner to sweep him here.
Minh's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Minh trying to control the position from guard on top but Joyner is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Mathew Joyner will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Minh is looking to clinch.
Quach Minh is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Joyner tries to land a front kick but Minh steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

Minh drives through with a takedown into guard.

Joyner pushes Minh off and gets back to his feet.

Joyner changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Minh looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Minh should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

The referee is taking a good look at Minh as he is on the wrong end of some big shots from Joyner!

Mathew Joyner overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
