PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rafael Cortez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joe Ruden (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cortez kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Wake Me Up. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rafael Cortez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Joe Ruden!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Robert Twigg and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A right-left combo lands from Ruden.


It looks like Rafael Cortez has been cut.
Cortez has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Roosters Coop in the buildup to the fight.
Ruden dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Cortez. That did some damage!
Ruden thuds his right hand into Cortez's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Good exchange - Cortez coming out on top.


It looks like Joe Ruden has been cut.

Ruden swings around for an armbar but Cortez sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Ruden's guard.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Ruden manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Cortez manages to get himself to full guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Ruden wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Cortez, who protects the arm well.
Ruden has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joe Ruden dominated that round.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.

Ruden lands with a shot to the body.
Cortez takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Cortez closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Cortez on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Ruden. Ruden obviously looking to wear him down.
Ruden throws a jab when Cortez was well out of range.
Cortez doesn't manage to clinch there - Ruden circles away.
Ruden connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Ruden works Cortez's body with a nice hook.
Cortez tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Cortez lands a nice hook to Ruden's body. Ruden takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

Ruden bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Ruden looks up at the clock and then as Cortez takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Ruden smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Ruden creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Cortez sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

The referee warns Cortez that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Ruden has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Cortez's face.


Rafael Cortez's cut is bleeding quite badly. He's got to try and protect it.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Rafael Cortez's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!

An out of breath Joe Ruden thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
