PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Clifton Navarro (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alberto Diaz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Clifton Navarro has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Clifton Navarro!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Alberto Diaz!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Chris Downing and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Navarro closes the distance and clinches.
Navarro is trying to break the clinch but Diaz has him pressed against the cage.
Navarro throws a head punch that misses.

Navarro is fighting off a takedown attempt but Diaz is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Navarro to the mat. Navarro regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Navarro tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Navarro keeping full guard, as Diaz tries to pass.

Diaz is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Navarro is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Navarro has escaped and now he's on top!

Diaz controls Navarro momentarily but Navarro frees himself.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Diaz working for a triangle but Navarro defends it easily.
Diaz looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Navarro working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Navarro got a little sloppy there for a moment and Diaz has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Navarro has managed to get both his arms back between Diaz's legs - danger averted.

Navarro will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Navarro looking to sit in guard and control but Diaz gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Navarro keeping moving, preventing Diaz from controlling successfully.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Diaz wants to pass the guard but Navarro is keeping the position.
Diaz trying to move into half guard but instead Navarro has managed to sweep!


Navarro has gone for a leg lock! Diaz slips out almost immediately though and dives into Navarro's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Diaz sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Navarro's guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Diaz is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Navarro defends it well.
Diaz wants to pass to mount but Navarro is defending the position.

Diaz trying to work for an americana but Navarro has managed to regain full guard.

Navarro wants to control but Diaz postures up.
Diaz trying to control the position but Navarro is working away.
Diaz moves into full mount!
Navarro is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Navarro is breathing heavily.
Navarro is squirming around, avoiding Diaz's attempts to control the action.
Diaz might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Navarro haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Diaz swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Navarro is now in Diaz's guard. A big mistake from Diaz there, giving up the dominant position!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alberto Diaz dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!

Navarro has one foot on Diaz's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

Navarro is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Navarro is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Diaz stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Navarro swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Diaz is still trying to improve position.
Diaz working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Diaz drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Diaz jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Navarro wants to stand up but Diaz is controlling him.
Navarro really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Navarro is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
The fight stays on the outside here - Navarro looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Diaz throws a counter combo.
Alberto Diaz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Diaz looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Navarro!
You can see the frustration on Navarro's face as Diaz controls the position.
Navarro is looking to regain half guard here but Diaz keeps moving and retains side control.

Diaz tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Diaz has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Diaz thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Navarro's head.
Diaz uses his free foot to push down on Navarro's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Navarro.

Diaz looking to control but Navarro is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Navarro squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Diaz moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Navarro has worked his arm free - good work by Navarro!
Diaz is looking to take a break and control but Navarro is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Diaz has an Americana. Navarro didn't react quickly enough there and he's in big trouble now! He tries to squirm out but is forced to tap! Diaz is delighted and gyrates in front of the ring girls. They seem to like the attention - it'll be interesting to see if Diaz hooks up with any of them at the after show party.
