PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Tsar Bomba (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dorian Yates (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bomba comes into the arena with Stratovarius - Abyss Of Your Eyes blaring out of the sound system. Both fighter's entrance songs getting the crowd jumping here.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Tsar Bomba!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 1, fighting out of New York, Dorian Yates!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Yates misses with a body kick.
The fighters circle momentarily. Bomba darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Bomba throws a combination that misses

and Yates counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Yates wants to control from the top but Bomba keeps moving.
Yates tries to free his leg and advance position but Bomba is retaining full guard.
Bomba has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Yates slips nicely into half guard.

Yates is looking for a kimura here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Yates stops Bomba from getting back to his feet.
Yates is trying to control. Bomba wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Bomba is looking to improve his position.

Yates wants to work for an arm triangle but Bomba is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Yates is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Bomba defends it well.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Bomba trying to control from the bottom.
Bomba works his way to full guard. Good work.
Yates wants to control from the top but Bomba keeps moving.
Bomba is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Bomba tries to pass to full mount but Yates defends it.
Yates has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Bomba is working away from the top position though.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Yates is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Bomba is controlling the pace.
Yates looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Bomba continues to stall.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Bomba tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Bomba misses with a right hand
and Yates counters with a good low kick that Bomba was not able to check.
Yates avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Bomba throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Tsar Bomba is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Bomba misses with a head kick.
A jab lands there for Yates.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Bomba ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Tsar Bomba seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

enabling Yates to counter with a crisp jab.
Yates takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Bomba is looking to slow Yates down with leg kicks.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Tsar Bomba will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Yates bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Yates throws a jab when Bomba was well out of range.
A looping hook to the body misses from Bomba. Yates does a little dance to reset his feet.
Yates moves out of range of the strikes.

Yates drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Bomba manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

Yates escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
A slow jab from Bomba misses its intended target.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Yates throws a nice inside leg kick.
Bomba misses with an attempted mid kick.
Bomba throws a jab but it's blocked by Yates.
Yates looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Bomba is looking to chop away at Yates's legs.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Yates! But no joy.

Bomba swinging wildly here.
A solid body kick from Bomba.
A shot to the liver by Yates. Beautiful body shot.
Bomba walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Yates checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Yates throws a leg kick which misses Bomba's front leg but catches the back leg as Bomba tries to avoid it.
Some wild striking there from Bomba.
Bomba lands a kick to the ribs of his opponent. Nice work there - in and out in a flash.
Jab, jab by Bomba - just one landing.
Yates cracks the inside of Bomba's front leg.

Yates needs to keep his hands up - Bomba had a free shot at his head there.
Yates with a poor takedown
and Bomba counters with a big head kick but Yates shrugs it off.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Bomba misses with a hook to the body
and Yates counters with a nice leg kick.
Yates throws a solid leg kick but Bomba takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Yates.
Bomba throws out a leg kick but Yates moves out of range and Bomba only half commits.
Bomba tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Yates manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Bomba moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Bomba throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Bomba misses with a body shot.
Bomba bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Yates lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Yates lands with a nice body punch.
Some wild striking there from Bomba.

Bomba lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Bomba takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
The fighters circling - Bomba throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Yates misses with a low kick.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Bomba lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Yates has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Yates and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.

Bomba tries a head kick but it misses.

Bomba is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Yates can do to turn this around?
Yates moves out of range as Bomba throws a body kick.
Yates throws out a counter right but Bomba avoids it with no problem.
Bomba goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Bomba throws a body shot but no joy.

Bomba tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Bomba lands a nice hook to Yates's body. Yates takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Yates throws a shot from downtown. Bomba moves away and avoids it.
Bomba takes one on the button.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Bomba connects with a right hand. Yates shakes it off.
Yates shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Bomba as he avoids it easily.
Bomba throws a push kick but Yates slaps the foot to one side.
Bomba smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Yates keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Bomba misses with a body shot.
Bomba keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tsar Bomba dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Yates gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
Yates moves out of range of the leg kick from Bomba.
Bomba lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Yates at a distance.
Yates throws a sloppy head kick and Bomba moves out of range easily.
Bomba missing with a left hand there. Yates was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Bomba throws a nice outside leg kick.
Bomba throws a body punch but Yates moves out of range.
Bomba lands a jab to Yates's midsection.
Bomba throws a hook but Yates blocks it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bomba has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Yates.
Tsar Bomba is winning the standup battle so far.
Bomba connects with a body shot.
Yates throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Bomba lunges at Yates with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Yates's hand.

Bomba throws a right and a left that Yates avoids nicely.
Yates uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Bomba.
Yates scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Bomba lands with a good body shot.
Yates looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Bomba ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Yates moves away.
Bomba on the wrong end of a kick to the body.
Bomba tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Yates was well out of range. Poor timing from Bomba.

Bomba fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Bomba throws a shot from downtown. Yates moves away and avoids it.

Dorian Yates has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Bomba misses with a looping right.
Yates on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Bomba. Bomba obviously looking to wear him down.
Yates takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Bomba misses with a looping left.
Yates blocks a low kick nicely.
Bomba cracks a nice hook into Yates's ribs.

Yates bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Yates wants to control but Bomba is keeping him busy.
Yates staying calm.
Bomba is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at Heavy Metal, so we'll see if he gets out of it.
Bomba gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!

Bomba has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.

Bomba is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
Dorian Yates has got the better of the ground game so far.
Bomba can't escape the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Yates not allowing Bomba to control his hands.
Bomba is in bad spot here.

Yates working for a choke but Bomba is defending well.
Bomba tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Bomba wants to hold on but Yates pushes him away.

And that's the end of the fight!
Tsar Bomba showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Bomba, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
