Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Anderson Gracie! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kenny Mcroberts! The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Thiago Cunha and Seu Braga.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mcroberts throws a predictable looking body shot
and Gracie moves into the clinch. A head punch blocked on the inside by Gracie. Mcroberts is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage. Gracie pulls guard. Mcroberts gets to his feet - Gracie follows without any prompting. Mcroberts punishes Gracie's body with a nice straight punch. Gracie clinches up with Mcroberts and pushes him back against the cage. Mcroberts breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Mcroberts with a hook. Gracie forces Mcroberts back against the cage and clinches. Mcroberts breaks the clinch.
Mcroberts scores with the left hand. Gracie knows he should have avoided that one. This has been an exciting period of action! Gracie walks into a left hand. A looping hook to the body misses from Mcroberts. Gracie does a little dance to reset his feet. As Mcroberts looks to move away, Gracie throws a big counter combo but Mcroberts just gets out of the way. Gracie pushes Mcroberts up against the cage in a clinch. Gracie pulls Mcroberts into guard.
Gracie has Mcroberts pulled in close to control his posture.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gracie keeping moving, preventing Mcroberts from controlling successfully. Mcroberts preventing the sweep. Gracie pulls Mcroberts in to control the position. Mcroberts wants to control from the top but Gracie keeps moving. Gracie wants to stand and escape but Mcroberts is having none of it. Mcroberts gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent. Gracie slips under a jab from Mcroberts. Gracie moves in looking to clinch but Mcroberts pushes him off. Mcroberts is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Gracie slips under a jab from Mcroberts. Gracie changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. Mcroberts throws a series of punches but Gracie avoids them all with ease. Mcroberts lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin. Mcroberts leaves Gracie with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mcroberts rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Gracie moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Gracie looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Mcroberts! Gracie in side control, throwing shots but Mcroberts defends. Gracie trying to control the action but Mcroberts is working from the bottom. Mcroberts throws a couple of punches but he's in a bad position and they don't land. Mcroberts really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gracie. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Mcroberts is trying to get back to half guard. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Mcroberts can do anything to dispel that myth. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Gracie working the head and body with strikes. Mcroberts is trying to escape and get back to his feet. Mcroberts looks winded! Gracie connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Mcroberts some visible discomfort.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gracie remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. Check out the look on Gracie's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Mcroberts is working to avoid the ground and pound but Gracie connects with a decent elbow. Gracie scoring with punches and elbows. Gracie scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Mcroberts to see if he's OK. Mcroberts tries to get back to half guard but can't. Mcroberts takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better. Gracie in side control, working for a kimura. He's got hold of an arm and he's torquing it... Mcroberts is tapping! That's the end of the fight!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Anderson Gracie! Anderson Gracie tried to hype himself up post fight but didn't word it too well and it ended up with him sounding like a bit of a tool.
