PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jalmari Pullo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Craig Clifton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pullo comes to the cage accompanied by Jiu Jitsu. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jalmari Pullo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 12 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Craig Clifton!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Yuuki Gou and Shirou Masuda.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pullo looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Pullo defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Clifton.
Pullo slaps away a takedown attempt from Clifton, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Pullo stuffs the takedown attempt from Clifton. Clifton gets slowly back to his feet.
Jalmari Pullo has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Craig Clifton.

Clifton gets a double leg takedown into Pullo's guard.
Pullo tries to land a sweep but no joy.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Clifton tries to free his leg and advance position but Pullo is retaining full guard.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Pullo is on top in guard.

Pullo is in a tricky position. We've heard reports from his gym mates at Bonsai Club MMA that he's been drilling escapes, so let's see if he can get back to his feet.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pullo stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Clifton swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Clifton can't keep his opponent in guard - Pullo advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Clifton is looking to improve his position.
Pullo takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Clifton is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Pullo jumps into side control!

You can see the frustration on Clifton's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Clifton prevents Pullo from improving position.
Clifton is looking to reverse the position.
Clifton stops Pullo from passing to mount.
Clifton tries to bench press Pullo off him but Pullo keeps the position.

Clifton has a hand on Pullo's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Pullo takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!
Clifton stops Pullo from taking his back. Still, being mounted isn't any better.

Pullo moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Clifton has worked his arm free - good work by Clifton!

Clifton is squirming around, avoiding Pullo's attempts to control the action.
Pullo wants to take his opponent's back but Clifton doesn't allow it.
Pullo avoids the attempt from Clifton to control.
Clifton is wriggling around trying to escape.
Clifton just holding on.
Clifton tries to hold on but Pullo postures up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Clifton reaches up to try and control the position but Pullo seems to have an arm triangle now! Uh oh! Clifton rolls and tries to escape and now Pullo has his back!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Clifton with a lazy takedown attempt

and Pullo counters with a single leg into guard. Clifton didn't expect that.
Clifton is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Clifton is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Jalmari Pullo overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Clifton tries to lock up and control but Pullo gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

I really don't envy Clifton right now.

Pullo is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Clifton is defending well though. Pullo let's go of the attempt for now.
Pullo is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Clifton can do to turn this around?

Pullo wants to control the position but Clifton frees himself and scrambles - Pullo manages to regain control in side control.

Pullo takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Pullo wants to take his opponent's back but Clifton doesn't allow it.

Pullo closes the distance and clinches up with Clifton, looking for a takedown. Pullo pushes Clifton against the cage but Clifton circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Clifton throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Pullo's waist but Pullo gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Clifton off to one side.

Pullo changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Clifton looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Clifton sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Clifton is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Pullo's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Pullo's back!
Clifton has Pullo flattened out and is raining down punches.
Clifton really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Pullo.
Clifton is trying to stick to Pullo's back but Pullo is turning into Clifton. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Clifton's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Pullo.

Clifton controls Pullo momentarily but Pullo frees himself.

Clifton has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Pullo is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Clifton.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Clifton trying his best to control but Pullo has mounted him.
Clifton keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Pullo is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Clifton to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Clifton shrugs it off.
Pullo takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Clifton tries to lock up and control but Pullo gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Pullo jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Clifton is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Clifton and Pullo has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Jalmari Pullo is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Pullo tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
Craig Clifton has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Clifton is looking for a sweep.
Pullo controls the position.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Pullo, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
