PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Daniel Ryan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bas Rutten (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ryan kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is I'd Love to Knock the Hell out of You by Hank Williams, Jr. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 34 - 25 - 2, fighting out of London, Daniel Ryan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Bas Rutten!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Hirohito Nitta and Shigeki Sano.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ryan fails with a takedown attempt.
Ryan changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Rutten tries to avoid it but Ryan manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Rutten to the ground. Rutten escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
That kick from Rutten tenderised Ryan's leg. Ryan is trying to keep his angry face on.
Rutten has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.

Ryan shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Ryan was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Ryan thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Ryan swings around for an armbar but Rutten sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Ryan's guard.
Rutten wants to pass the guard but Ryan is keeping the position.

Ryan had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Rutten defends it easily.
Ryan will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Ryan working for submissions but it's allowed Rutten to get to half guard.

Ryan manages to get to full guard.
Rutten is looking to work some ground and pound but Ryan has wrist control.

Rutten got a little sloppy there for a moment and Ryan has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Rutten has managed to get both his arms back between Ryan's legs - danger averted.
Ryan controls Rutten momentarily but Rutten frees himself.
Rutten seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Ryan is looking for a triangle but Rutten pushes his legs off easily.

Rutten stands and steps away. Ryan gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Rutten throws a nice looking combination but Ryan bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Rutten gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Ryan to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Rutten really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Ryan. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Ryan drops back, looking for a kneebar! Rutten looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Rutten looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Rutten!

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

It seemed like Rutten was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

Rutten throws a hook to the side of Ryan's head but Ryan sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Ryan will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Rutten connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Ryan's hands.
Ryan changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Rutten tries to avoid it but Ryan manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Rutten to the ground. Rutten escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
No luck for Ryan with that takedown attempt.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

This has been an exciting period of action!

Rutten changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Horrible takedown attempt by Ryan or perhaps it was just good defense by Rutten, which made it look bad.
Rutten is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.

Bas Rutten seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
