Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kunto Dewo! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Roy Hendrix! The judges for this bout are Ben Watson, Ben Hemmingworth and Damien Edna.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hendrix tries to sprawl but Dewo drives through with a takedown into half guard. Dewo is taking a breather. Hendrix says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Hendrix moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Hendrix keeping full guard, as Dewo tries to pass. Dewo has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Dewo drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Hendrix dives on top into guard. Dewo keeping moving, preventing Hendrix from controlling successfully. Hendrix throwing strikes but missing. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Hendrix looking to pass the guard. Dewo throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Dewo is controlling Hendrix's posture.
That's one minute gone in the round. Dewo is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Hendrix defends well. Dewo escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Hendrix gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Hendrix thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Hendrix drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Hendrix jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Hendrix stops Dewo from standing up. Dewo had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Hendrix defends it easily. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Dewo tries to strike from the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Dewo looking for a triangle here. Hendrix is fighting it but it looks tight! Dewo pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Hendrix is tapping out - this one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:21 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Kunto Dewo! A relieved looking Kunto Dewo thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
