PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Salvador Serrano (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jose Aldo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Salvador Serrano!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jose Aldo!
The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Matheus Silva and Thiago Cunha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Serrano fails in his attempt to clinch.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Aldo.
Aldo wants to stand but Serrano is controlling his arm.
Serrano is trying to control Aldo's posture but Aldo avoids it.
Serrano seems a little lost for a moment, as Aldo dominates the positioning.
Serrano tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Aldo wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Serrano could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Aldo throws an elbow but Serrano slips to the side and avoids it well.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.

Aldo tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Aldo has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

It looks like Aldo might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Serrano tries to get back to half guard but can't.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
You can see the frustration on Serrano's face as Aldo controls the position.

Aldo working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Aldo has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Serrano has Aldo pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Serrano pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Aldo tumbling to the mat - Serrano dives into Aldo's guard.

Aldo's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Aldo slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Aldo wants to pass the guard but Serrano is keeping the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Serrano tries to clinch up but Aldo circles away and keeps his distance.

Aldo closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Aldo is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Serrano will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Let's hope that Aldo has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Aldo.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Jose Aldo is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Aldo is defended easily by Serrano.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Serrano has picked Aldo up - he's going for a ride! Serrano dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.

Aldo is trying is best to control the position here.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Serrano lands a nice short elbow.
Aldo is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.

Aldo is trying to maintain the position but Serrano is very close to passing his half guard.
Aldo is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Serrano's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Serrano's back!

Aldo is breathing heavily.
Aldo trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Serrano doesn't escape.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Aldo tries to get the hooks in deep but Serrano pushed the leg off.

Serrano is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.

Jose Aldo showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Aldo tries for a takedown but Serrano sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Serrano shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Aldo manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Aldo wants to pass the guard but Serrano is keeping the position.

Serrano is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Serrano tries to clinch but Aldo is having none of it.

Aldo clinches up with Serrano and pushes him back against the cage.

Aldo has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Aldo is looking to escape.
Serrano is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Aldo pushes Serrano off looking to stand but Serrano dives back in and keeps control.

Aldo works his way to full guard. Good work.
Serrano trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Serrano has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Aldo wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Aldo is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Serrano has his hands clasped together but Aldo extends and breaks Serrano's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Aldo.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:40 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Jose Aldo!
A relieved looking Jose Aldo thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
