Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Solomon Wayne! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 5 - 1, fighting out of New York, Devon Gilliam! The judges for this bout are Nard Betker, Paulsen Ambrosius and Aafke Stam.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Wayne takes one to the chin there. Wayne closes the distance and clinches up with Gilliam, looking for a takedown. Wayne pushes Gilliam against the cage but Gilliam circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Despite the aggression on Gilliam's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter. Gilliam stuns Wayne with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range. Gilliam lands with a hook. Wayne tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head. Gilliam tries to keep at a distance but Wayne has taken the fight into the clinch. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Gilliam has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Gilliam stops a takedown attempt from Wayne.
Both fighters working to control the clinch. Wayne is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Gilliam pulls him back up using the underhooks. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Solomon Wayne. That's going to take a lot out of him. A head punch on the inside from Gilliam fails to land. Wayne is working for takedown but Gilliam is calmly controlling the position for now. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gilliam pushes Wayne back against the cage and unloads with a body punch. A nice right hand lands inside from Gilliam. Gilliam dips a shoulder and cracks Wayne with a mighty uppercut! Wayne falls back against the cage and Gilliam unloads with a barrage of strikes! Wayne is completely out with his eyes open, only supported by the cage! Save him ref! Eventually the ref decides to do his job and jumps in - Gilliam screams abuse at the incompetent official before going over to celebrate with his corner. Brutal stuff!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Devon Gilliam! In his post fight interview, Devon Gilliam started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
