Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Kriss Lund! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Freddie Mays! The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, Colin Fotheringham and James Glass.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Lund misses with a takedown attempt - Mays sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Mays throws a right and a left that Lund avoids nicely. Horrible takedown by Lund or perhaps it was just good defense by Mays which made him look bad. Mays closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Mays lands in his opponent's guard. Lund working a defensive guard here.
Mays has gone for a leg lock! Lund slips out almost immediately though and dives into Mays's guard. Lund throws a strike but Mays rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mays with a flurry of punches that miss. Mays won't allow Lund to sweep him here. Lund had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Mays is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Lund Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Mays's back instead. Lund trying to control momentarily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Mays can't escape the position.
Mays trying to get back to his feet but Lund is in full control for now. Lund knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mays on the ground. Lund misses with a punch to the head. You can see the frustration on Mays's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Mays manages to reverse the position and now he's in Lund's guard. Nice work there by Mays.
Mays makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Mays preventing the sweep.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Lund not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Mays wanted to stand there but Lund had control of the position. Lund throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Mays is pushing down on Lund's leg trying to pass to half guard. Lund is fighting to maintain full guard but Mays has managed to sneak the leg through. Mays tries to pass the half guard into mount. Lund knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Lund trying to hold on to Mays's head to control him but Mays postures up.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Horrible takedown by Lund or perhaps it was just good defense by Mays which made him look bad. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kriss Lund. That's going to take a lot out of him. Lund is breathing heavily. Mays closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Mays lands in his opponent's guard. Mays trying to control but Lund is working from the bottom. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Lund is wriggling around but Mays manages to pass to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Freddie Mays dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Mays shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Lund as he avoids it easily. Mays stuffs the takedown. Mays tries to close the distance and clinch up against the ropes but Lund paws at him with a jab and circles away. Mays with a poor takedown and Lund moves into the clinch. Lund with an attempt at a knee that misses.
Mays looking for a takedown. Kriss Lund has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Freddie Mays. Mays wants to get back to striking at distance but Lund won't allow it.
Lund comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush. Lund misses with a knee strike.
Lund tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Mays has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Lund avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch. Lund misses with a knee strike.
Lund prevents a takedown attempt there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mays is looking to break free of the clinch but Lund has double underhooks. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Lund stops a takedown attempt from Mays.
Lund scores a nice knee to the body.
Mays is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the ropes. Lund is pressed up against the ropes. Mays has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Lund down to the mat. Lund avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance. Mays throws a push kick but Lund slaps the foot to one side. Lund pushes Mays up against the ropes in a clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mays wants to break free but Lund has control.
Mays lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Lund or not. Lund with an attempt at a knee that misses.
Mays breaks from the clinch.
Freddie Mays seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Mays closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Lund to the mat! Lund manages to get full guard. Lund trying to keep a closed guard but Mays is proving a slippery customer.
Lund looking for a guillotine here but Mays defends easily.
Lund wants to sweep but no luck.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mays throws a big right hand that misses. Lund looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Mays puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard. Lund works his way to full guard. Good work. Mays advances to half guard. Lund has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Mays is working away from the top position though. Mays is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Lund wants to control but Mays is having none of it. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Lund keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Mays looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet. Mays putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Lund wants to hold on but Mays pushes him away. Lund manages to regain half guard. Good work. Mays is working for a kimura but Lund is defending it quite comfortably.
Mays is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Lund sees it coming and defends easily. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close second round but Freddie Mays will probably get the nod - 10:9. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!
Mays tries to clinch up and Lund counters with a takedown into side control. Lund advances nicely into full mount. Mays regains half guard. Lund slips a nice elbow through Mays's hands, connecting with Mays's forehead. Freddie Mays has got the better of the ground game so far. Lund seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Mays slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lund advances to half guard. Lund missing with the ground and pound from half guard. Lund stalling away here and it's allowed Mays to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard. Lund looking to sit in guard and control but Mays gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Mays stays in close to Lund's body and controls the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Lund avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Lund looking to control.
Lund trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage. Mays wants to control from the top but Lund keeps moving. Mays trying to stand up but can't free himself from Lund's guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Lund not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Lund tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Mays with a hook. Mays with a lazy takedown attempt and Lund counters with a nice double leg into guard. Mays is trying to keep Lund in close.
Mays is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Lund wants to control from the top but Mays keeps moving. Lund is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Mays is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
And that's the end of the fight! Kriss Lund showed his dominance in that final round. I think Mays has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
