Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Stratovarius Smiff! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Pavel Kovganov! The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Paul Gruel and Chris Saunders.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kovganov goes for a double leg but Smiff avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Smiff continues to drive forward. Smiff tries to counter with a takedown but Kovganov is quick to defend against it. Smiff throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Smiff fails in his attempt to clinch. Kovganov gets caught napping as Smiff dives in and scores a takedown. Kovganov manages to retain guard. Smiff won't allow Kovganov to get back to his feet. Smiff is pushing down on Kovganov's leg trying to pass to half guard. Kovganov is fighting to maintain full guard but Smiff has managed to sneak the leg through. Smiff is taking a breather. Kovganov says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Smiff passes the guard and advances to mount! We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Smiff looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smiff controlling his opponent. Smiff tries to control but Kovganov wriggling away. Kovganov tries to control Smiff's body but Smiff pushes him off. Kovganov squirms to his side and now Smiff has his back! Kovganov tries to escape but Smiff has the hooks in and won't let him break free. Smiff looking for the choke from the back. Smiff lands a shot to the head. Kovganov tries to escape but Smiff has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kovganov fending off the submission attempt from Smiff. Smiff is working for the choke. I would put my money on him to finish from this position. He's rolled onto his back and has dragged Kovganov with him. Kovganov is trying to defend but Smiff has an arm under the chin now! Kovganov grimaces and is forced to tap out!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:24 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Stratovarius Smiff!
