PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Robert Martinez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack Lester (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Lester is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Five finger death punch - jekyll and hyde. Jack Lester struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 171.4lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Robert Martinez has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Robert Martinez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jack Lester!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Jorge Garcia and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Lester darts in and clinches Martinez up against the cage.
Lester goes for a takedown attempt but Martinez pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Martinez has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Martinez dives in for a single leg takedown but Lester sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Martinez shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Lester sprawls well. Lester wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Martinez gets slowly back to his feet.
Martinez shoots in but Lester avoids the takedown attempt easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Robert Martinez. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Martinez is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Lester manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
Lester is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Lester has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Martinez regains guard immediately.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Lester really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Martinez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Martinez sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Lester's guard.

Martinez breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Martinez drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Lester gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Lester pulls Martinez into guard.

Lester wants to stand and escape but Martinez is having none of it.
Martinez would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Lester utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Lester looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Martinez will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Lester has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Martinez off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Martinez thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Lester has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Martinez has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Lester has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Martinez clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Martinez is defending well here and trying to improve his position.

Lester is wriggling around but Martinez manages to pass to half guard.

Lester moves into range and clinches up with Martinez.
Martinez tries to stall but Lester uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Lester gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Martinez regains guard.

Lester throws a series of punches but Martinez avoids them all with ease.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
You can see the frustration on Martinez's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Martinez had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Lester defends it easily.

Lester got a little sloppy there for a moment and Martinez has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Lester has managed to get both his arms back between Martinez's legs - danger averted.

Martinez is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Lester gets his way!

Well Lester has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
