Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Bochamp Smathers! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Luiz Palhares! The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Ren Mimura and Tatsuya Matsuyama.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Smathers rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Palhares moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Smathers swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Smathers throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Palhares. Smathers throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. A punch combination from Smathers misses. Smathers misses with a straight right. Smathers misses with a few strikes there.
Smathers throws a front kick aimed at Palhares's knee but Palhares avoids it well. Palhares blocks a head kick by Smathers.
Palhares bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Smathers is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Palhares is controlling him well. Smathers is breathing heavily. Palhares is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Smathers will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already. Palhares advances to mount. Smathers tries to buck Palhares off but he can't manage it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Palhares has hold of Smathers's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Smathers manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Palhares controlling the pace for now. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Palhares moves into full mount! Smathers really wants to buck Palhares off and get back to his feet. Palhares tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Smathers trying desperately to get to his feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Palhares controlling the pace for now.
Despite being in the dominant position, Luiz Palhares just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Smathers gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. A head punch blocked on the inside by Palhares. Smathers lands with a short shot to the head.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Smathers lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards. Smathers misses with a short punch on the inside. Smathers swings wildly with an uppercut but Palhares uses good head movement to avoid it. Palhares successfully pulls guard.
Smathers is looking to stand up but Palhares won't let him. Palhares pulls Smathers in close to prevent any damage. Smathers tries to stand but Palhares is controlling from the bottom.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Palhares has Smathers pulled in close to control his posture. Palhares has a closed guard, preventing Smathers from standing up. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Palhares changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Smathers looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Smathers is trying to get back to his feet. Palhares tries to move to mount but Smathers blocks the move with his legs. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Luiz Palhares showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!
Palhares decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Palhares. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man. Smathers is trying to stand up here but Palhares is controlling him well. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Smathers is trying to escape back to his feet but Palhares uses the scramble to pass into side control.
Smathers wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done! Both fighters are breathing heavily.
