Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Emmitt Woodward! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, James Goard! The judges for this bout are Sergei Dronov, Ivan Kurochkin and Aleksei Zolotukhin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Goard throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Woodward really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Goard looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Woodward! Goard tries to advance to mount but Woodward denies him. Goard thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Woodward struggling a bit here. Goard wants to lay and pray for a moment but Woodward keeps working. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Woodward is looking to regain half guard here but Goard keeps moving and retains side control. Goard trying to control the position but Woodward is working away. Woodward is looking to reverse the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Woodward is working hard here to advance position. You can see the frustration on Woodward's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Woodward tries to get back to half guard but can't. Goard wants to control but Woodward is keeping him busy. Woodward is trying to get back to half guard. Woodward knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Goard on the ground. Woodward is working to avoid the ground and pound but Goard connects with a decent elbow. Woodward tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Goard wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Goard in the domination position with Woodward hanging on. Woodward is trying to get back to half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Goard wants to lay and pray for a moment but Woodward keeps working.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Goard stands up and we're back to a striking position. Goard throws a sloppy head kick and Woodward moves out of range easily. Woodward throws a counter high kick but Goard was just alert enough to avoid it. Goard darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Woodward has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Goard is working away from the top position though. Woodward actively working from the bottom here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Goard is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Goard seems to be looking for submissions.
Goard wants to take a breather but Woodward is having none of it. Goard is nestled in close to Woodward, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Woodward is trying to control but can't.
Woodward tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land. Goard is looking to take a break and control but Woodward is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Woodward trying to control but Goard postures up.
Goard seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Woodward is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Goard pulls his head out easily. Woodward wants to control but Goard is keeping busy and won't allow it. Ground and pound from Goard. Woodward looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Woodward is breathing heavily. Goard blocks the strikes from Woodward.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Goard tries to stand but his arm is trapped. Woodward has a hand on Goard's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Goard takes advantage of the position though and mounts him! And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
James Goard dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Goard darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Woodward is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Woodward wants to control but Goard passes into side.
Woodward manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Goard seems to be working for a kimura but Woodward defends the submission attempt. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Woodward trying to control here but he's found himself mounted! Oh no!
Woodward is looking to improve his position but Goard isn't that keen on the idea.
That's one minute gone in the round. Goard looking to control and managing it successfully. Woodward is squirming around, avoiding Goard's attempts to control the action. Woodward is desperately trying to improve his position but Goard has a good base and remains in mount. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Goard sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Goard tries to control but Woodward wriggling away. Woodward wants to control but Goard is having none of it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Goard trying to control but he's not successful this time. Woodward takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position. Goard trying to control but he's not successful this time. Goard controlling from mount. Goard manages to capitalize on a mistake by Woodward to take his back! Goard has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Woodward wants to escape the position.
Goard wants to control but Woodward is keeping busy. Woodward tries to roll but Goard sticks to his back.
Woodward breaks Goard's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Goard is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Woodward throws a sloppy strike from the bottom. He's now off balance and Goard manages to pass to side control. Goard trying to control the position but Woodward is working away. Goard takes a little break here. Woodward wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well. Goard scoring with punches from side control. Woodward is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Goard moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now. Woodward takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Goard tries for a kimura but Woodward is defending well. Goard has hold of Woodward's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Woodward seems comfortable defending it but Goard has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Woodward is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Woodward is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Goard couldn't care less - he's delighted!
