The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, John Kavanagh and Russell Pearce.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lacey missing with a left hand there. gates was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
gates gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Lacey wants to stand and escape but instead gates has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
gates makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Lacey wants to improve his position but instead gates has moved into half guard.
Lacey has guillotine here! It looks pretty tight! Could this be all over! No, gates escapes and passes into side control at the same time. Nice work there by gates!

so gates counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
gates wanted to stand there but Lacey had control of the position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Lacey throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

and gates counters by moving into the clinch.
gates drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Lacey gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Lacey gets control of gates's arms and successfully pulls guard. Lacey will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

A slapping leg kick lands for Lacey.
Lacey feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
