PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Thiago Meida (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and WhatA Surprise (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Thiago Meida!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, WhatA Surprise!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Thiago Cunha and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Surprise lands with a hook. Meida tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Surprise throws out a powerful jab.
Surprise should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

Surprise fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Meida, pushing him back against the cage.
Meida is trying to pull guard but Surprise has him pressed against the cage.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Surprise has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.

Meida jumps guard and drags Surprise to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Surprise throws a big right hand that misses.
Surprise wants to pass the guard but Meida is keeping the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Surprise is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Meida is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Meida has escaped and now he's on top!

We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Surprise has eaten all the pies!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Meida is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Surprise is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Meida drops back, looking for a kneebar! Surprise looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Surprise looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Surprise!

Meida tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Surprise wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Meida is in all sorts of trouble here.
Surprise wants to control the pace but Meida is squirming around nicely.
Meida holds on to Surprise as tight as he can, avoiding damage.

Surprise perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Surprise is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Meida is just riding it out for now. Surprise eventually gives up the hold.
Surprise wants to take a breather but Meida is having none of it.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Meida working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Surprise doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Surprise manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Meida tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Surprise just stands there and leans against the cage.

Meida drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Surprise manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Meida has Surprise in his guard.

Surprise must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Surprise accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

With the fighters clinched against the cage, Surprise creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.

Surprise bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Meida's guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

WhatA Surprise comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Surprise has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
