Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Dmitry Boitsov! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Peter Larsson! The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, James Ackerman and Steven Brown.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Boitsov misses with a straight left. Boitsov will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Larsson displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Boitsov throws out the jab. Boitsov uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Larsson. Boitsov appears to be looking for a counter takedown. Larsson throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Boitsov on the side of the head. Boitsov is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Boitsov with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Larsson to score with a decent uppercut. We've been hearing reports that Boitsov has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. Larsson uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Boitsov. Dmitry Boitsov seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Larsson throws a hook but Boitsov blocks it. Boitsov throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Larsson sees it coming and avoids it easily. Larsson is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Boitsov shoots and misses and Larsson counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Boitsov shoots in for a takedown but Larsson shows good takedown defense. Larsson looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dmitry Boitsov. That's going to take a lot out of him. Larsson throws out a loose jab but Boitsov uses good head movement to avoid it. Larsson throws a shot from downtown. Boitsov moves away and avoids it. Boitsov fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
That's one minute gone in the round. Boitsov looks to throw the jab but Larsson is out of range. Boitsov dives in and scores a takedown into Larsson's guard. Boitsov drops back looking for a leg! Larsson is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Larsson manages to kick Boitsov off! Boitsov jumps back into Larsson's guard. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Larsson can do anything to dispel that myth. Boitsov pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Larsson is keeping the position for now. Larsson really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Boitsov. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Boitsov trying to control the position from guard on top but Larsson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Larsson is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Boitsov looking to pass the guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Boitsov drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Boitsov jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Boitsov slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Boitsov looking to pass the guard. Boitsov is pushing down on Larsson's leg trying to pass to half guard. Larsson is fighting to maintain full guard but Boitsov has managed to sneak the leg through. Larsson is staying active underneath Boitsov, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Boitsov is trying to work for a kimura but Larsson is defending well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Boitsov is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Larsson defends it well. Boitsov trying to mount his opponent but Larsson defends it. Boitsov seems to be looking for submissions.
Larsson is staying active underneath Boitsov, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Larsson looks like he's trying to stand up.
Boitsov is looking for a kimura here.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Boitsov with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Boitsov passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Larsson! Boitsov controlling from the full mount. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Boitsov is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Larsson has managed to escape the submission attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Dmitry Boitsov dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Larsson missing with a left hand there. Boitsov was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Boitsov misses with a left hand and Larsson counters with a straight right hand. Larsson stuffs the takedown attempt from Boitsov. Boitsov gets slowly back to his feet. Boitsov is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Larsson can do to turn this around? No luck for Boitsov with that takedown attempt. Boitsov shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Larsson napping and manages to drive through into side control! Larsson tries to escape back to his feet but Boitsov has kept hold of him... Oh, now he's got Larsson's back and is looking for the choke... Is it? Is it sunk in? YES! Larsson is tapping! Boitsov saw the opportunity and took it - ruthless!
