Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jamie Varner! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Don Stewart! The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Shigeki Sano and Ren Mimura.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Varner defending well as Stewart loads up on a big left hand. Varner attempts a counter takedown but Stewart avoids it well and moves away. Stewart slaps away a takedown attempt from Varner, before circling back to the center of the mat. Varner gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Stewart counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Stewart. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Varner avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Stewart is looking to work some ground and pound but Varner has wrist control. Stewart postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Stewart sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Varner's guard. Stewart wants to lay and pray for a moment but Varner keeps working. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Varner is trying to stand up here but Stewart is controlling him well. Stewart has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
That's one minute gone in the round. The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Stewart lands a nice short elbow. Still in half guard, Stewart seems content to control. Stewart with the ground and pound but Varner uses the opportunity to regain guard. Stewart in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Stewart lands a couple of elbows. Stewart looking to pass the guard. Stewart wants to control from the top but Varner keeps moving. Varner wants to stand and escape but Stewart is having none of it. Stewart trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Varner wants to stand but Stewart is controlling the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Stewart throws a big right hand that misses. Stewart throws a strike but Varner rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Varner has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Stewart keeping moving, preventing Varner from controlling successfully. Stewart manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Varner manages to get himself to full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Varner is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Stewart passes Varner's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Stewart seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Varner is rocked! Stewart seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Varner is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!
