PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between George North (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Santiago Palmer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). North comes into the arena with Vince Staples- Norf Norf blaring out of the sound system. Palmer is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by GSP - Not Impressed. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, George North!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, Santiago Palmer!
The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Tarja Halkonen and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Palmer scores with a nice head shot.
North really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
North misses with a head kick.
Palmer shoots in but no luck this time.
North appears to be looking for a big counter.
North tries to move into range but Palmer moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
North tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Palmer drops down looking to force a counter takedown but North defends it well.

Palmer looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for North!
North tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Palmer slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Palmer is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. North defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

Even with his hooks in, Palmer manages to miss with strikes from the back.

Palmer is looking for the choke from the back position but North is controlling his hands well.
North prevents Palmer from getting a body triangle.
Palmer might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control North haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
North covering up well under a series of strikes from Palmer.
The crowd hopeful of a finish here - Palmer's supporters are on their feet, screaming for him to go for the rear naked choke.
Palmer lands a couple of good shots to his opponent's body and a final shot to the head. Good little attack there by Palmer.
Palmer has the hooks in. North is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

Palmer is persistently looking for the submission but North is defending it well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


North blocks a jab.
North shoots in and drives through. Palmer sprawls well.
Palmer misses the jab.
North has been working on his balance at He Man Women Haters Club, so perhaps that has help him stuff some of the takedown attempts by Palmer.

Palmer changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. North looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
North tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Palmer wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Palmer is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down North's shoulder. That is not cool.

Palmer thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Palmer wants to control for a moment but North uses the opportunity to move back to half guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
North is refusing to be controlled, as Palmer sits in half guard.
Palmer seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Palmer wants to lay and pray for a moment but North keeps working.
Palmer controlling the action here.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

North is trying to stand.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Palmer ducks down and throws a hook to the body but North moves away.
Palmer scores with a nice strike.
Palmer lunges at North with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by North's hand.
Palmer misses with a looping left.

and North counters with a head kick. That will keep Palmer thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
North tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Palmer tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

North rushes Palmer and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.

Palmer has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
North lands a knee to the head there! That was nasty!

Palmer blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
North misses with a short punch on the inside.
North tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Palmer is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Santiago Palmer will probably get the nod - 10:9.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!



North has managed to clinch.
North with a knee to the head.
Palmer has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. North is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

North breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Palmer goes for a double leg but North avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as North continues to drive forward.
Palmer moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.

George North has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Santiago Palmer.

North closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Palmer did well to prevent North getting side control.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
North wants to stand up but Palmer is controlling the position.
Palmer has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Palmer tries to roll over but North keeps him under control.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
North is taking a breather. Palmer says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Palmer is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but North pulls his head out easily.
North wants to stand up but Palmer is controlling the position.
Palmer has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. North is working away from the top position though.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Palmer is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by North.
Palmer cracks North with a right hand to the side of the head.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

North escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
North displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Palmer throws out the jab.

Palmer closes the distance and pushes North back into the cage.
North lands a right hand.
Palmer has North pressed against the cage.

Palmer takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Palmer drops to a knee looking for a takedown but North gets the underhooks and prevents it.

George North has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

North escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Palmer throws the left hand but North avoids the punch easily.
North connects with a high kick.
North uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Palmer.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

North throws a quick counter head kick but Palmer was just out of range.
Palmer throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
North looked to counter with a high kick but didn't commit.
North throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.

North fails with the takedown.
Palmer ducks down and throws a hook to the body but North moves away.

North steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Palmer.

And that's the end of the fight!
George North showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Palmer has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
