PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Daniel Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Shemus (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). John Shemus is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Daniel Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Shemus!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Anthony Taglia and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shemus closes this distance looking for a takedown but Johnson circles away.
Shemus defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Johnson.
Shemus circles away from the clinch attempt.
Shemus misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Shemus takes a kick to the body and keeps moving.
Johnson darts in looking for a takedown but Shemus gets double underhooks and turns Johnson into the cage.
Johnson fails with the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Daniel Johnson. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Johnson connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Shemus's hands.
Johnson tries to land a body kick
enabling Shemus to counter with a crisp jab.

Shemus tries to keep at a distance but Johnson has taken the fight into the clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Shemus is trying to trip Johnson. He has hold of a leg but Johnson is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Shemus persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Johnson is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Johnson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Shemus throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Johnson works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Shemus gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Shemus stuffs the takedown.
Shemus is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.

Shemus closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Shemus looks winded!
Johnson tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Shemus wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Shemus decides to stand back up.
Johnson doesn't manage to clinch there - Shemus circles away.
Daniel Johnson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Johnson closes the distance and clinches up with Shemus, looking for a takedown. Johnson pushes Shemus against the cage but Shemus circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Johnson shoots in looking for a takedown but Shemus manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Johnson's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Shemus steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Johnson.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Horrible takedown attempt by Shemus or perhaps it was just good defense by Johnson, which made it look bad.
Johnson throws a big counter combination but Shemus scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.

Shemus drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Shemus chips away with some ground and pound.

Johnson has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Shemus can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Johnson tries to land a sweep but no joy.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Shemus lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Johnson is trying to control the position but Shemus postures up.
Shemus stands up over Johnson, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Shemus is in close to Johnson's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Shemus sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Shemus lands a couple of decent looking shots.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Shemus seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Johnson tries to clinch up

and Shemus counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Johnson!
Shemus scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Johnson to see if he's OK.
Johnson tries to buck Shemus off but Shemus is having none of it.
Shemus lands a few punches from side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Shemus dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Johnson moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Johnson tries to clinch but Shemus moves out of range.

Shemus closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Johnson tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
Johnson is in all sorts of trouble here.

Shemus working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Johnson looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Shemus! Submission of the night perhaps?

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:57 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). John Shemus!
John Shemus decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
