PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Bob Brirt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Quincy Mathers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mathers has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. Quincy Mathers will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Bob Brirt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Quincy Mathers!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Edson Gomes and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Brirt has Mathers up against the cage in a clinch.
Mathers looks gassed!
A quick uppercut on the inside from Brirt.
Mathers tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Brirt just stands there and leans against the cage.
Brirt changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Mathers fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Mathers takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

Brirt gets the takedown into side control.
Mathers is looking to regain half guard here but Brirt keeps moving and retains side control.
Brirt tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
Brirt creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Mathers sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Brirt stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Brirt tries for a takedown but Mathers sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Mathers keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bob Brirt. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Mathers scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Mathers is keen to just control but Brirt is a slippery customer.
Mathers wants to stand up but Brirt has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Brirt on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Brirt tries to get out of the position.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Brirt takes the fight into the clinch.

Brirt jumps guard.
Mathers stopping the sweep attempt from Brirt.
Brirt lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Mathers!
Mathers tries to improve his position but instead Brirt has taken his back!

Mathers is trying escape back to his feet. He turns into his opponent's guard and eventually finds his way back to his feet.

and Brirt holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
With the fighters up against the cage, Mathers throws an elbow but misses.

Brirt breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Brirt closes the distance and clinches up with Mathers, looking for a takedown. Brirt pushes Mathers against the cage but Mathers circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Brirt drives through and clinches with Mathers against the cage.
Brirt wants to break the clinch but can't.
Brirt slows down the pace here.
Brirt looking for a takedown.
Mathers misses with a hook from the clinch.
Mathers gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Brirt.

Brirt jumps into guard, dragging Mathers to the mat.
Mathers trying to control the position from guard on top but Brirt is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Brirt wants to sweep here but Mathers controlling him for the moment.
Mathers won't allow Brirt to get back to his feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Brirt doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Brirt is trying to control the position but Mathers postures up.
Mathers won't allow Brirt to sweep him here.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Mathers throws a combination. Brirt tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Mathers tries to clinch but Brirt moves away

and Brirt counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Mathers!

Brirt is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
Nice sprawl there from Mathers as Brirt shoots in.
Horrible takedown by Brirt or perhaps it was just good defense by Mathers which made him look bad.

Brirt tries for a takedown but Mathers sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Brirt wants the takedown. Mathers is fighting it off but Brirt persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Mathers's guard against the cage.

Brirt is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Mathers seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Mathers seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Mathers thows a huge punch but Brirt dodges it nicely.
Brirt is controlling Mathers's trapped leg to prevent Mathers from advancing to side control.
Brirt has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Brirt attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Brirt fails with the takedown.
Mathers closes the distance but Brirt moves to the side
and Brirt counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.
Brirt throws a right and a left that both miss.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Mathers tries to clinch but Brirt moves away

and Brirt holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Mathers on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Brirt can't break the clinch.
Brirt dodges an elbow strike from Mathers.
Mathers lands a nice knee to the body.

Brirt jumps guard.
Mathers trying to control but Brirt is working from the bottom.
Brirt seems keen to control Mathers's posture.
Brirt keeping full guard, as Mathers tries to pass.
Brirt wants to sweep but no luck.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Mathers is standing up over Brirt. Brirt looks to escape but Mathers dives into side control.

Mathers throws a hook to the side of Brirt's head but Brirt sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Brirt tightens his grip and picks Mathers up, before dumping him to the ground. Mathers manages to land in guard.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Brirt accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Brirt would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Brirt wants to control from the top but Mathers keeps moving.
Mathers keeping full guard, as Brirt tries to pass.
Mathers preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Brirt looking for a guillotine here but Mathers defends easily.

Brirt had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Mathers is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Brirt Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Mathers's back instead.

Brirt just keeping the dominant position. He can't wait too long though, otherwise the referee will stand them back up.

Brirt is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Mathers has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.

Brirt is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Mathers is defending well though. Brirt let's go of the attempt for now.
Mathers trying to control the action but Brirt just sinks the hooks in.
Quincy Mathers has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Mathers rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

Well Brirt has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
