PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Edgar Locke (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Edgar Locke!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, John Smith!
The judges for this bout are , and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Smith shoots in but Locke avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Smith throws a wild body kick that Locke sees coming a mile off.
John Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Smith wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Smith tries to land knees in the clinch but Locke avoids the damage to the body.
Smith blocking some punches.

Smith breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Smith misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Locke throws a sloppy head kick and Smith moves out of range easily.
Smith shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Locke but Locke pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Smith clinches but Locke breaks the clinch

and Locke counters with a shoot takedown. Smith fights it but they end up in guard.
Locke stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Smith swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Locke trying to control but Smith is working from the bottom.

Smith had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Locke is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Smith Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Locke's back instead.

Locke tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Smith can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Locke is looking to escape.
Locke tries to reverse the position but Smith maintains control.

Smith jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Locke manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Smith looks gassed!
Locke tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Smith wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Locke struggling a bit here.
Locke is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Smith throws a sloppy head kick

and Locke counters by clinching up.

Locke breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Smith throws a nice head kick!

Locke rushes Smith and presses him up against the cage.
Locke takes an elbow to the forehead.
The referee calls for Locke to work.

Locke manages to break the clinch.
Locke tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Smith paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Smith closes the distance looking to clinch

and Locke counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Locke tries to free his leg and advance position but Smith is retaining full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Locke slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Locke wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Smith, who protects the arm well.
Locke content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Smith is trying to buck Locke off.
Smith tries to bench press Locke off him but Locke keeps the position.

Locke decides to stand up, so the ref orders Smith to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Locke closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Smith to the mat! Smith manages to get full guard.

Smith manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Smith throws a series of punches but Locke avoids them all with ease.
Smith goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Smith closes the distance looking to clinch

and Locke counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Smith's guard now.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Smith keeping moving, preventing Locke from controlling successfully.

Smith has his foot on Locke's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Locke works his way back into a safe position though.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Smith blocks a head kick by Locke.
Locke tries to clinch but Smith moves out of range.
Edgar Locke is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Locke instigates a clinch.
Locke has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Smith avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
With the fighters up against the cage, Smith throws an elbow but misses.
Smith is trying to break the clinch but Locke has him pressed against the cage.
Smith wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Locke has him pressed against the cage.
Locke tries to break the clinch but Smith is controlling the position.

Smith breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Smith doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Locke counters by clinching up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Locke pushes Smith back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.

Smith throws a sloppy head kick

and Locke counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Locke is working for a kimura but Smith is defending it quite comfortably.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Smith is trying to get back to full guard.
Locke wants to take a breather but Smith is having none of it.
Locke is pressing down on Smith's thigh, looking to free his foot. Smith is holding on for now.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Smith throws a head kick that misses.
Smith is looking to chop away at Locke's legs.

Locke drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Locke wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.
Locke pushing down on Smith's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.

Locke is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Smith doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Locke.

Locke is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Smith has managed to free his arm - good work.

Smith won't allow Locke to pass to mount.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Smith tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Locke counters with a nice double leg into side control. Smith won't be happy with that.

Smith tries to bench press Locke off him but Locke keeps the position.
Locke advances to mount.
Smith is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Smith working to try and regain half guard.
The referee warns Smith that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Smith is trying to escape the mount.
Locke pushing the pace here, looking to move to his opponents back and work for a finish.

Locke goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Smith is on top in guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Locke working for a triangle but Smith defends it easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Locke's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

and Locke counters with a takedown into side control.
Locke is looking to take a break and control but Smith is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Smith tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Locke wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Locke decides to stand back up. Locke steps back and let's Smith get back to his feet.
Locke circles away from the clinch attempt.
Smith keeps the fight on the outside.

Locke scores with a takedown into Smith's guard.
Locke trying to control the position from guard on top but Smith is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Smith is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Smith is pulling down on Locke's head. It's preventing any offense from Locke, at least for the moment.

Smith keeping moving, preventing Locke from controlling successfully.

Smith working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Locke doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Locke manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Smith preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Smith is looking to sinch up a triangle. Locke throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Smith's body to avoid the submission. Smith has instead reached around Locke's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Smith arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.
