Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 0 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Russell Jones ! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Hector Salavez! The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Eddie Farnsworth and Columbo Gatti.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Salavez drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles. Jones 's corner calls for a 1-2. Jones obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range. Jones lands a nice hook to Salavez's body. Salavez takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes. Salavez looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Jones ! You can see the frustration on Jones 's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Jones is positioning himself to get back to half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Jones manages to work his way to half guard, despite Salavez's best efforts. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Salavez connects with a nice short shot to Jones 's temple. Jones is trying to control but can't.
Salavez not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Salavez working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Jones tries to get to full guard but Salavez has control of the leg. My spies in El Tico 's Academy inform me that Salavez has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! Salavez thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
That's one minute gone in the round. Salavez drops an elbow to the side of Jones 's head. Salavez working over Jones with some ground and pound. Jones looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Jones blocking the ground and pound attempt from Salavez. Salavez working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. Jones works his way to full guard. Good work. Salavez landing with the ground and pound. Salavez keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Jones 's head. Salavez content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Jones thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage. Jones utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Salavez scoring with some ground and pound. Salavez is in close to Jones 's body, working some short punches and elbows. Salavez working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Jones 's head. Jones is trying to keep Salavez in close.
Jones working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Salavez doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Jones is tightening it up a little... Salavez has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Salavez reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Salavez taps out! Nice BJJ there by Jones !
