PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Frankie Workman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jones is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by One Call Away - Charlie Puth. Jon Jones will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Frankie Workman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jon Jones!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Robert Twigg and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Workman fails with a takedown attempt.
Workman shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Jones as he jumps to the side.
A combination from Jones does no damage.
Jones throws a hook but Workman blocks it.

Jones closes the distance and clinches.

Jones breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Jones lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Workman circles away quickly and effectively.
Jones avoids the head kick by Workman.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jones throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Jones misses with a double jab.
Jones fails to land with a series of punches.
Jon Jones seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Jones clinches up against the cage.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Workman has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Jones uses from the top position.
Workman is controlling Jones's posture.
Jones must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Workman bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Jones's guard.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Jones can do anything to dispel that myth.
Jones wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Workman manages to pass to side control.
Workman lands strikes from half guard.
Jones tries to roll over but Workman keeps him under control.
Jones is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Workman looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Jones with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Jones really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Workman. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Jones is trying to stand.
Workman winds up and cracks Jones with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Jones wants to get back to full guard but Workman has passed into side control.

Workman tries for a kimura but Jones is defending well.
Workman looks up at the clock and then as Jones takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Workman smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Jones is working to avoid the ground and pound but Workman connects with a decent elbow.
Workman has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Jones takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.

Workman tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Workman stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Workman closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Jones did well to prevent Workman getting side control.
Jones scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Workman manages to mount him!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Workman will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Jones is trying desperately to improve position.
Workman landing strikes from the mount.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Jones is in a horrible position here. Workman smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Workman connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Workman gets tackled into the cage by Jones. Jones maintains the clinch.

Workman has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Jones regains guard immediately.
Workman working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Jones's head.
Workman with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Jones looking to hit a scissor sweep but Workman is one step ahead there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jones trying to keep a closed guard but Workman is proving a slippery customer.
Workman postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Workman connects with a couple of short punches.
Jones looking to control but Workman passes into half guard.
Jones is trying to control but Workman passes into side control!
Workman lands a few punches from side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Workman tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Workman has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Workman is working Jones over with some ground and pound from side control.

Jones struggling a bit here.
Workman working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Frankie Workman overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Workman gets to mount! Jones was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.
Jones is wriggling around trying to escape.

Workman cracks Jones with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Jones can't escape the position.
Jones is breathing heavily.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Workman has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Jones's face.
Jones takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Jones in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Jones wants to control but Workman is having none of it.

A nice elbow there by Workman.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jones takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Workman has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Jones's face.
Workman really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Jones is looking to improve his position but Workman isn't that keen on the idea.

Workman lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Frankie Workman dominated that second round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! And we move into the final round!



Workman closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Workman lands in his opponent's guard.

Jones is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Workman presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
Workman is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Jones can do to turn this around?
Come on Jones - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Workman wants to break free but Jones has control.
Workman wants to take the fight to the mat but Jones manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Workman jumps guard but Jones turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kneeeeees! The crowd are calling for knees to the body. Jones obliges.
Jones lands a right hand that snaps the head of Workman backwards.

Jones breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Workman shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Jones kicks off Workman and gets to his feet.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Workman shoots in but Jones avoids the takedown attempt easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Frankie Workman. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Workman shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Jones kicks Workman off and gets back to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Workman fails with the takedown
and Jones counters with a stiff right hand.
Workman moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Workman takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.


Workman is rocked!


It looks like Frankie Workman has been cut.
A head kick by Jones - that's a beauty! Workman is out but he's somehow still standing... he's going... going... gone. Like a drunk walking down the middle of the road, the inevitable face plant follows and the delayed knockout arrives. Even Jones can't help but laugh at the bizarre end to this one!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:27 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Head Kick). Jon Jones!
Jon Jones spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
