Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
25 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Josh Barnett! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
10 - 9 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, James Toby! The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Hugh Johnson and Summer Carpenter.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Barnett blocks a leg kick. Barnett feinted with a counter takedown. Good leg kick by Toby there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Toby tries a low kick but Barnett avoids it. Toby connects with a solid leg kick. We've been hearing reports that Barnett has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. Toby ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Barnett moves away. Barnett avoids the head kick by Toby.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Toby thows a leg kick but Barnett checks it and Barnett counters with a nice double leg into half guard. Barnett is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Toby has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Zen Balance Monastery. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one. Toby is trying to stand back up but Barnett is controlling him
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Toby is defending against the submission attempts here by Barnett.
Toby keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Toby is trying to control but can't.
Barnett has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Toby has one foot on Barnett's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet. Barnett checks a low kick from Toby. Barnett drops down looking for a counter takedown but Toby sprawls and moves away. Toby throws a lazy body kick and Barnett counters with a takedown into side control. Toby tries to improve position but can't. Toby is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Barnett asserts his dominance and retains side control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Barnett has an Americana. Toby didn't react quickly enough there and he's in big trouble now! He tries to squirm out but is forced to tap! Barnett is delighted and gyrates in front of the ring girls. They seem to like the attention - it'll be interesting to see if Barnett hooks up with any of them at the after show party.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:21 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Josh Barnett! Josh Barnett seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
