Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Cortez Deleon! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Billy Poole! The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Tiny Johnson and Cecil Peabody.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Deleon avoids a punch combination nicely.
Deleon looked to counter that last move with a leg kick but didn't pull the trigger. Poole looks to land a combination. Deleon sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
It looks like Cortez Deleon has been cut. Deleon slips a jab and a cross from Poole.
Poole tries to clinch but Deleon is having none of it. Poole throws a head kick that misses. Deleon drops down looking for a counter takedown but Poole sprawls and moves away. Poole throws a head kick but Deleon moves out of range.
Sloppy strikes from Poole. Those never looked like landing. Deleon half committed to a counter leg kick. Poole swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
As Poole backs away, Deleon returns fire with a leg kick that just misses. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Deleon throws a right hand that Poole ducks under and follows up with a left that Poole also avoids with ease. Poole tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away. Sloppy strikes from Deleon. Those never looked like landing. And Poole responds with a good body kick, but Deleon manages to step out the way in time. Poole throws a leg kick that is checked and Deleon counters with a one-two to the body. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Poole throws a one two combo.
That's one minute gone in the round. Poole shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Poole showed some decent athleticism there. Deleon manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Poole keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage. Poole creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Deleon's defenses. Poole tries a knee to the head but Deleon blocks it.
Poole gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground. Poole must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Poole tries to free his leg and advance position but Deleon is retaining full guard. Deleon has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. Poole wants to stand but Deleon has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Poole is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first. Deleon could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Poole got a little sloppy there for a moment and Deleon has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Poole has managed to get both his arms back between Deleon's legs - danger averted.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Deleon looking to hit a scissor sweep but Poole is one step ahead there. Deleon is looking to cinch up a triangle. Poole throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Deleon's body to avoid the submission. Deleon has instead reached around Poole's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Deleon arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:34 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Cortez Deleon! Billy Poole spoke after the fight, saying 'I went out and gave 110 percent and sometimes it just isn't enough. I had a great opponent and this shows me I need to work harder and get better. I will keep pushing myself harder and harder and will see if I can pull off a win next fight.'.
