PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Bruce Tripplet (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rollo Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gracie is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Jiu Jitsu: Apaga Mas Não Bate. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Bruce Tripplet!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rollo Gracie!
The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Aleksandr Martynov and Viktor Lagutenko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Tripplet jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Gracie wants to counter with a clinch but Tripplet pushes him away.
Tripplet throws the left hand but Gracie avoids the punch easily.
Tripplet connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
A looping hook to the body misses from Gracie. Tripplet does a little dance to reset his feet.
Gracie shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Tripplet pinned against the cage. Tripplet gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Tripplet throws a right hand that Gracie ducks under and follows up with a left that Gracie also avoids with ease.
Tripplet blocks a head kick by Gracie.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gracie fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Gracie fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Tripplet avoids it really well and circles away.
Bruce Tripplet has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rollo Gracie.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Tripplet closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Gracie decides to pull guard.
Tripplet wants to get up but he can't break Gracie's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Tripplet landing some decent shots from guard.
Tripplet pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Gracie is keeping the position for now.
Gracie pulls Tripplet in close to prevent any damage.
Tripplet knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Gracie on the ground.

Tripplet avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Tripplet is fighting to break Gracie's control of his arms but Gracie is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Tripplet is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Gracie keeping full guard, as Tripplet tries to pass.

Gracie looking for a guillotine here but Tripplet defends easily.
Tripplet is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Gracie controls Tripplet momentarily but Tripplet frees himself.
Tripplet trying to stand up but can't free himself from Gracie's guard.
Tripplet trying to control the position from guard on top but Gracie is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Tripplet controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gracie is trying to keep Tripplet in close.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Gracie moves away from the strike by Tripplet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Gracie gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Gracie displaying some good clinch control by pressing Tripplet up against the cage.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Gracie slows down the pace here.
Gracie receives a warning from the referee for stalling.
Gracie jumps guard but Tripplet stands there with Gracie around his waist. Gracie gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
A head punch on the inside from Tripplet fails to land.
Tripplet misses with a punch on the inside.
Gracie is trying to pull guard but Tripplet turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Gracie displaying some good clinch control by pressing Tripplet up against the cage.
Gracie looking to stall.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Tripplet throws a head punch that misses.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bruce Tripplet dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Gracie drops his hands momentarily and Tripplet takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Tripplet throws an off balance right hand

and Gracie counters with a nice double leg into side control. Tripplet won't be happy with that.
Tripplet is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Gracie can do to turn this around?

Gracie working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Tripplet tries to bench press Gracie off him but Gracie keeps the position.
Gracie misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gracie wants to control but Tripplet is keeping him busy.
Gracie passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Tripplet!
Gracie can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Tripplet is looking to escape.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Gracie has control of Tripplet's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Tripplet regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Tripplet wants to control but Gracie is having none of it.
Gracie throwing strikes here but Tripplet is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
Gracie takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Gracie fails to move to back control.

Gracie is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Tripplet to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Tripplet shrugs it off.

Gracie working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
Tripplet is controlling an arm, preventing Gracie from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.

Tripplet keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Gracie trying to control but Tripplet is having none of it.
Tripplet wants to control but Gracie is having none of it.
Gracie takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Tripplet is looking to improve his position but Gracie isn't that keen on the idea.

Gracie goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Tripplet is on top in guard.

Gracie is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Gracie is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Gracie is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Tripplet defends well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rollo Gracie showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Tripplet closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Tripplet swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Gracie walks into a stiff left hand from Tripplet.
Tripplet looks to land a right hand but Gracie moved out of range.
Tripplet bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Gracie's head.
Tripplet throws a big shot that misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A cross from Tripplet lands.
Tripplet misses with an uppercut.
Tripplet throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Gracie decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Tripplet's guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Gracie stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Tripplet swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Gracie passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Tripplet is trying to get back to half guard.
Tripplet wants to control but Gracie postures up.
Tripplet is being controlled here.
Tripplet is looking to regain half guard here but Gracie keeps moving and retains side control.

Gracie is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Tripplet knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Tripplet is trying to get back to half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Gracie is trying to get an arm triangle but Tripplet is defending well.
Tripplet tries to improve position but can't.
Gracie is staying tight to Tripplet's torso, preventing him from escaping.

Gracie thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Gracie is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Tripplet has escaped the position, nice work there.
A control attempt from Tripplet but he's now mounted!
Tripplet tries to lock up and control but Gracie gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Rollo Gracie has got the better of the ground game so far.
Gracie prevents Tripplet from getting the reversal.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Gracie wants to control but instead Tripplet manages to regain half guard.
Gracie content to control rather than advance.
Gracie trying to mount his opponent but Tripplet defends it.
Tripplet wants to improve his position but Gracie is controlling well.
Tripplet wants to get back to full guard but Gracie has mounted him!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Gracie sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Rollo Gracie.
I think Gracie has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
