Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Buddy Lyles! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Paul Barnes! The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Steven Brown and Richard Clark.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Barnes has Lyles up against the cage in a clinch.
Lyles pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Lyles uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Barnes.
Lyles doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body. Lyles takes a swing at Barnes's ribcage but misses. Barnes misses the jab. Lyles pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Barnes closes the distance and clinches. Lyles is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath. Barnes digs a right hand into Lyles's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Lyles's gas tank. Lyles is breathing heavily. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Barnes has Lyles pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Lyles manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing. Barnes holding his opponent close, against the cage.
Barnes's coach down at English Top Team - THE Hybrid Gym (11 ELITE ) was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Barnes's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight. Still in the clinch, Barnes scores with a nice short uppercut. Barnes lands a right hand that snaps the head of Lyles backwards.
That's one minute gone in the round. Barnes lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage. Lyles looking to slow down the pace here. Lyles blocks a punch to the side of the head.

Lyles tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Barnes's elbow. A nice right hand lands inside from Barnes. Barnes struggles to land a body shot inside as Lyles controls his hands.

With the fighters clinched against the cage, Lyles creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut. Lyles blocks an uppercut.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Barnes throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges. Barnes scores with a shoulder strike. Barnes leaning against his opponent.

Paul Barnes dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Lyles waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Barnes. Barnes lands with a straight right. Lyles didn't see that one coming. Barnes fakes a head shot and lands one to the body. Lyles feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Barness jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist! Barnes jabs at Lyles's body. Lyles throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Barnes bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut. Barnes closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Lyles's guard. Barnes is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Barnes is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Barnes stands and throws Lyles's legs to the side, diving into side control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lyles is trying to control Barnes's posture but Barnes avoids it. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Barnes wants to control but Lyles is keeping him busy. Barnes is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Lyles is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Barnes goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Lyles has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Barnes but great work by Lyles. Barnes manages to get back to half guard. Barnes trying to control here.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ground and pound from Lyles. Barnes moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Lyles throwing strikes but missing. Lyles got a little sloppy there for a moment and Barnes has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Lyles has managed to get both his arms back between Barnes's legs - danger averted. Lyles scoring with some ground and pound. Barnes has Lyles pulled in close to control his posture. Lyles trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Barnes working for a triangle but Lyles defends it easily.

Lyles stands over his opponent and dives in with a flying punch! Barnes throws up his legs and catches Lyles in a triangle! Oh this looks tight! Lyles tries to escape but he's forced to tap! Wow, fantastic work there by Barnes! That came out of nowhere!
