Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Garland Houston! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Stroke Play! The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Roger Salmon and Jeff Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Play closes the distance and clinches. Play misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Houston.
Houston creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Play's defenses. Play wants to break free but Houston has control.
Play wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. Houston is looking to control Play's arms but Play gets an underhook and turns him. Now Houston has his back to the cage. Houston is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage. Houston wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Houston lands with a good tight uppercut to the head. Play looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now. Houston looking for a takedown. Houston has a couple of punches blocked by Play.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Houston pushes off an throws an elbow but Play leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage. Houston tries to break the clinch but Play is controlling the position. Houston scores with a shoulder strike. Houston manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back. Play's corner is telling him to maintain position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Play stands up and waves to Houston to follow him. Play fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Houston on the side of the head. Play drops Houston with a beautiful combination! Houston stares up at his opponent, who ushers him back to his feet - Play is looking for the KO!
Houston is rocked!
It looks like Garland Houston has been cut. I'm just looking down at my notes here and I see that.... oh! Play has cracked Houston with a big right, followed by a left! He's out on his feet! Play lands another huge swinging hook and Houston tumbles to the canvas! The ref dives in to save Houston, before Play can land any more shots!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:29 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Stroke Play!
