Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Michael Saskatchewan! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, CP Munk! The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Yukihiro Shimada and Yukihiro Yamamoto.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Saskatchewan just misses with a punch to the body.
Saskatchewan scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business. We've been informed that Munk has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result. Munk tries to clinch but Saskatchewan moves out of range. Munk wants to clinch. Munk lands with a nice body kick. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Munk throws a head kick that misses. Munk swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
so Saskatchewan counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Saskatchewan is in close to Munk's body, working some short punches and elbows.
That's one minute gone in the round. Munk is trying to keep Saskatchewan in close.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Saskatchewan lands a couple of decent looking shots. Saskatchewan forces his way into half guard. Munk trying to control here.
Saskatchewan seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Saskatchewan lands strikes from half guard. Saskatchewan trying to control from half guard but Munk is working away. Saskatchewan working over Munk with some ground and pound. Munk looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Munk is looking to improve his position.
Still in half guard, Saskatchewan seems content to control. We've been hearing that Saskatchewan has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Munk is staying active underneath Saskatchewan, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Saskatchewan trying to control the pace. Saskatchewan working over Munk with some ground and pound. Munk looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Saskatchewan looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Saskatchewan is nestled in close to Munk, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Saskatchewan lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Saskatchewan winds up and cracks Munk with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Munk tries to roll over but Saskatchewan keeps him under control. Saskatchewan slips a nice elbow through Munk's hands, connecting with Munk's forehead.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Saskatchewan is keen to just control but Munk is a slippery customer. Saskatchewan wants to advance to full mount but Munk doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead. Munk looking to hit a scissor sweep but Saskatchewan is one step ahead there. Saskatchewan trying to control but Munk is working from the bottom. Saskatchewan cracks Munk with a solid left hand. Saskatchewan looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Saskatchewan is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Munk is rocked!
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Saskatchewan arches his back and unloads with a massive left and a right! Munk's eyes roll back into his head, he's out cold! The ref dives in to stop the fight - wow, they were hard shots!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:21 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Michael Saskatchewan!
