PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Lesley Johns (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Big Nath (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Lesley Johns!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Big Nath!
The judges for this bout are Ron Honeybunn, Winston Howard and Francis DeMontford.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Johns gets caught napping as Nath dives in and scores a takedown. Johns manages to retain guard.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Johns manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
Johns misses with an elbow strike.
Nath just leaning against Johns, taking a breather.

Nath manages to pull guard.
Johns wants to stand but Nath is controlling his posture from full guard.
Johns controlling from the top position.
Johns being controlled here momentarily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Johns thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Johns is fighting to break Nath's control of his arms but Nath is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Nath had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Johns defends it easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Nath seems keen to control Johns's posture.

Nath escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Johns gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Johns wants to control from the top but Nath keeps moving.

Nath wants to get back to his feet but Johns is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Nath has his foot on Johns's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Johns works his way back into a safe position though.

Nath is trying to keep Johns in close.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Johns bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Johns wants to lay and pray for a moment but Nath keeps working.

Johns is trying to get an arm triangle but Nath is defending well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Johns wants to stand but Nath is controlling his arm.

Johns stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Nath forces Johns back against the cage and clinches.
Johns wants to take the fight to the mat but Nath manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Johns tries a body shot but Nath blocks it.
Nath jumps guard but Johns stands there with Nath around his waist. Nath gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Nath has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Johns uses from the top position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Johns drops back, looking for a kneebar! Nath looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Nath looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Nath!

Johns wants to control but Nath postures up.

Nath decides to stand back up.
Nath slaps away a takedown attempt from Johns, before circling back to the center of the mat.
A countering left hand to the body from Nath misses.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Johns goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Nath tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Johns just stands there and leans against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Big Nath dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Nath will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Johns attempts a counter takedown but Nath avoids it well and moves away.
Big Nath is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Nath fails with the takedown.
Nath lands a nice looking kick to the body. Johns takes a step back to recover.

Nath fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Johns to the ground. Nath is now in Johns's guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nath stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Johns swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Nath is fighting to break Johns's control of his arms but Johns is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Nath controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Nath wants to control from the top but Johns keeps moving.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Johns holds on and takes a little breather.
Johns not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Johns looks for a takedown but Nath sprawls well.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Nath shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Nath was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Nath is breathing heavily.
Johns is trying to escape the position but Nath is controlling the position.
Johns struggling a bit here.
Johns really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Nath is chipping away with strikes.
Nath misses with the ground and pound.
Nath in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.
Nath trying to control the position but Johns is working away.
Nath misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

The referee asks Nath politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Nath prefers to stall for the moment though.

Nath decides to stand up, so the ref orders Johns to his feet.

Johns shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Johns showed some decent athleticism there.
Nath tries to get to full guard but Johns has control of the leg.
Johns wants to stand but Nath has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Johns postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Nath to stand up.
Johns fails with the takedown.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Nice sprawl there from Nath as Johns shoots in.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lesley Johns. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Nath throws an off balance right hand
and Johns counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Johns shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Johns darts in looking for a takedown but Nath gets double underhooks and turns Johns into the cage.
Nath goes for a high kick. It partially lands.


It looks like Lesley Johns has been cut.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Johns will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Nath controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Big Nath showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Lesley Johns's cut.
That's time! Johns's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Nath throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Johns's waist but Johns gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Nath off to one side.
Johns appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body.

A head kick misses from Johns.

Nath drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Johns is looking to get back to his feet here but Nath is keeping cool and he's managed to take Johns's back.
Nath has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Nath takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Johns manages to reverse the position and now he's in Nath's guard. Nice work there by Johns.

Johns controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Nath keeping moving, preventing Johns from controlling successfully.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Johns wants to get up but he can't break Nath's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Johns has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Nath is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Johns is aware though and is defending well.
Nath wants to stand up but Johns is controlling him.
Big Nath has got the better of the ground game so far.
Johns looking to sit in guard and control but Nath gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Nath working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Nath drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Nath jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Johns is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Johns seems keen to control Nath's posture.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Nath lands a head kick. Johns smiles back at him and beckons him forward.

and Johns counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

and Johns counters with a nice uppercut.
Lesley Johns has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Big Nath.
Johns throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Nath shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Johns counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Lesley Johns has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Big Nath is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Nath defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Johns.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Lesley Johns.
Well Nath has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
