The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.

Smith connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Tsuruta momentarily.
It looks like Tomomi Tsuruta has been cut.

and Tsuruta counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

Smith lands a nice shot to the body.

Tsuruta shoots in and bounces Smith off the ropes to secure the takedown into guard.
Smith on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Smith tries to get out of the position.

Tsuruta connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Smith some visible discomfort.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Smith parries the strikes from Tsuruta easily there. Tsuruta is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Smith to escape.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
You can see the frustration on Smith's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Tsuruta working his ground and pound in the gym. So far it seems to be working well.
Smith takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

Smith takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Smith lands with a hook. Tsuruta tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Smith throws a hook to the side of Tsuruta's head but Tsuruta sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Tsuruta drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Smith defends it well.

Tsuruta is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Smith rather than just go for the knockout.

and Tsuruta makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Tsuruta. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Come on Tsuruta - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.

Tsuruta tightens his grip and picks Smith up, before dumping him to the ground. Smith manages to land in guard.

Tsuruta has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Tsuruta loads up on a big left hand. Smith felt that one! He's just covering up now, not defending himself intelligently - Tsuruta looks towards the ref and unloads with 3 more big shots and the ref has no choice but to stop the fight! Smith can't hide his disappointment, as Tsuruta celebrates the victory.
