Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Hugo Guzman! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Pablo Sandoval! The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Thiago Cunha and Felipe Paraventi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Guzman gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Sandoval to score an easy takedown into full guard. Guzman uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Sandoval closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Guzman to the mat! Guzman manages to get full guard. Guzman looking for a sweep. Not yet Guzman, not yet. Sandoval won't allow Guzman to get back to his feet. Sandoval is fighting to break Guzman's control of his arms but Guzman is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Sandoval works over Guzman with some ground and pound from guard. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Guzman seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Sandoval wants to control from the top but Guzman keeps moving. Guzman is looking to stand up but Sandoval isn't so interested in that idea. Sandoval trying to control the position from guard on top but Guzman is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Guzman could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Sandoval prevents Guzman from getting back to his feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sandoval drops back looking for a leg! Guzman is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Guzman manages to kick Sandoval off! Sandoval jumps back into Guzman's guard. Guzman wants to sweep here but Sandoval controlling him for the moment. Sandoval makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Guzman keeping moving, preventing Sandoval from controlling successfully. Sandoval looking to pass the guard. Guzman has his hands on Sandoval's head, controlling the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Sandoval pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Guzman is keeping the position for now. Guzman is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Guzman looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Guzman controlling the position.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Guzman gets in close and instigates a clinch. Guzman holding his opponent close, against the cage.
Guzman jumps guard and drags Sandoval to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
That's three minutes gone in the round. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Guzman holds on and takes a little breather. Sandoval with a nice head shot there. Sandoval keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Guzman's head. Sandoval is fighting to break Guzman's control of his arms but Guzman is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Guzman lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.
Sandoval throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Guzman escapes and throws Sandoval's legs to the side, diving into side control! Sandoval looks winded! Guzman takes a little break here. Sandoval wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sandoval throws a few strikes from the bottom but Guzman takes advantage and mounts! Guzman fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Guzman blocks Sandoval's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom. Sandoval tries to get back to half guard but can't. Guzman takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Sandoval throwing hammer fists to the chest of Guzman. What's that going to do exactly? The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Guzman raining down hammerfists from mount. Guzman fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Hugo Guzman dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Guzman clinches. Guzman manages to pull guard.
Sandoval wants to stand but Guzman is controlling his posture from full guard. Guzman keeping moving, preventing Sandoval from controlling successfully. Guzman is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Sandoval can do to turn this around? Guzman is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Sandoval defends well. Guzman pulls Sandoval in close to prevent any damage. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sandoval must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
That's one minute gone in the round. Guzman wants to sweep but no luck. Sandoval won't allow Guzman to get back to his feet. Sandoval preventing the sweep. Guzman seems keen to control Sandoval's posture. Guzman is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Sandoval content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Guzman is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Sandoval is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Guzman pulls his head out easily. Sandoval is breathing heavily. Sandoval looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Guzman is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound. Guzman controlling the action here. Sandoval looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Sandoval has a hand on Guzman's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Guzman takes advantage of the position though and mounts him! Guzman working the ground and pound effectively.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Guzman controlling the position easily from mount. Sandoval is in all sorts of trouble here.
Guzman pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage. Guzman has isolated one of Sandoval's arms. Sandoval looking to fight him off but Guzman twists into an armbar. It's tight... Will he tap?? YES, he's tapped! This one is all over!
