Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Forest Maynard! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Alexei Berdnikov! The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Marco Blurström and Roosa Järviläinen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Maynard tries a head kick but it misses.
Berdnikov closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Berdnikov is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Maynard sees it coming and defends easily. Berdnikov with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Maynard is staying active underneath Berdnikov, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Berdnikov is looking for a kimura but Maynard is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Berdnikov to get the leverage. Maynard pushes Berdnikov off looking to stand but Berdnikov dives back in and keeps control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Berdnikov wants to control but Maynard is keeping him busy. Berdnikov is trying to work for a kimura but Maynard is defending well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Berdnikov wants to lay and pray for a moment but Maynard keeps working. Maynard really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
That's one minute gone in the round. Maynard is pushing off trying to get to his feet. Berdnikov has hold of the leg though and he's dropped back for a heel hook… has he got it?? YES! Maynard is tapping! This fight is all over!
