Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Lauri Lintunen! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Marcelo Santiago! The judges for this bout are Viktor Lagutenko, Illya Tyunina and Konstantin Menshow.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Lintunen keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Santiago. Jab by Lintunen. Santiago takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Santiago looks to land a left hand but Lintunen moved out of range nicely. Santiago fails with the takedown. Lintunen throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Lintunen rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Santiago moves out of range and avoids them all easily. A low kick from Lintunen is predictable there and Santiago counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Lintunen slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Lintunen lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.
Santiago throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Lintunen escapes and throws Santiago's legs to the side, diving into side control!
That's one minute gone in the round. Lintunen controls the position. Lintunen's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Santiago tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Lintunen wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Lintunen slows the pace down. Santiago wants to control but Lintunen postures up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Lintunen throwing shots but missing, from side control. Santiago being controlled for a moment. Santiago is trying to buck Lintunen off. The strikes coming from Lintunen are missing the target in this wave of attacks. Lintunen wants to control but Santiago is keeping him busy. Santiago is looking for a sweep.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Lintunen is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Santiago will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Lintunen misses with the ground and pound. Lintunen cracks Santiago with an elbow. That is naaassty. Santiago is looking for a sweep. Santiago is trying to control Lintunen's posture but Lintunen avoids it. Santiago is looking to regain half guard here but Lintunen keeps moving and retains side control. Santiago struggling a bit here.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Lintunen throws a series of punches but Santiago avoids them all with ease. Santiago darts in looking for a takedown but Lintunen gets double underhooks and turns Santiago into the cage. Lintunen throws a big counter combination but Santiago scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Horrible takedown attempt by Santiago or perhaps it was just good defense by Lintunen, which made it look bad. Lauri Lintunen has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Marcelo Santiago. Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Lintunen lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Santiago has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Santiago and we're back underway with a touch of gloves. Lintunen tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Lintunen throws a lazy right hand but Santiago sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Lintunen misses with a left hand and Santiago counters with a stiff right hand. Lintunen misses with an attempted mid kick.
Santiago lands a jab to the nose.
Lintunen is rocked! Santiago shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. Oh Lintunen is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Santiago working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Lintunen's thigh. Lintunen counters though and makes it back to full guard. Santiago drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Lintunen manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Santiago has Lintunen in his guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Lauri Lintunen dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Santiago is defended easily by Lintunen. Lintunen seems to have got his legs back now. Lintunen misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Santiago moves out of range of the body kick. Lintunen misses with a right hand and Santiago counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Crunch! Lintunen slams his shin into Santiago's torso. Santiago sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs. Lintunen throws a leg kick but Santiago sees it coming and moves out of range. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Lintunen misses with a right hand and Santiago counters with a huge left! Lintunen is in big trouble! He's backing up but Santiago isn't giving him chance to recover. Under a barage of punches the ref has to step in to save Lintunen from any more damage. A dominating finish by Santiago!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:49 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Marcelo Santiago!
