PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Li Fen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Z Mann (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Fen might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Its The Final Countdown. Mann is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Birdland. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Li Fen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Z Mann!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Robert Twigg and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mann throws a wild body kick that Fen sees coming a mile off.
Fen misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Mann.

Fen looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Mann!
Mann swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.

Fen moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Mann has worked his arm free - good work by Mann!
Fen tries to advance to mount but Mann instead regains half guard.
Mann flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

Fen is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Mann is just riding it out for now. Fen eventually gives up the hold.

Fen not doing much here.
Mann makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Mann.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mann is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Mann is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Mann thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Fen's head.
Fen is trying to get back to full guard.
Fen keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Fen is pressing down on Mann's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Fen looking for a sweep. Not yet Fen, not yet.
Mann throwing strikes but missing.

Fen throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Mann must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Mann working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Fen's head.
Fen utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Fen looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Mann throws a big right hand that misses.
Mann makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Mann is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Fen is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Fen has escaped and now he's on top!

Fen has gone for a leg lock! Mann slips out almost immediately though and dives into Fen's guard.
Mann keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Fen's head.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mann throws a big right hand that misses.
Fen trying to control the position.
Fen is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Mann is refusing to be controlled, as Fen sits in half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mann pushes Fen off looking to stand but Fen dives back in and keeps control.
Mann throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Mann landing strikes from the bottom.
Mann manages to get to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Z Mann will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Fen throws a head kick but Mann moves out of range.
Mann throws a series of punches but Fen avoids them all with ease.
Mann throws a right and a left that both miss.
Mann uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Fen.
Nice sprawl there from Mann as Fen shoots in.
Mann lands with a shot to the body.
Mann throws a right hand that Fen ducks under and follows up with a left that Fen also avoids with ease.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Fen shoots in for a takedown but Mann shows good takedown defense.

Z Mann seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Mann misses the shot to the body.
Fen tries to bum rush Mann with a series of wild strikes but Mann uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Mann throws a big shot that misses.

Mann lands with an uppercut that bounces Fen off the cage and back into rage.
Mann throws a lazy head kick

so Fen counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Fen pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Mann is keeping the position for now.
Mann trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Fen slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Fen working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Mann is not content to let Fen control the position.
Mann is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Fen off and has taken his back!

Mann lands a couple of good shots to his opponent's body and a final shot to the head. Good little attack there by Mann.
Fen trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.
Mann throwing damaging strikes from the back! Fen could be in trouble here!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Fen tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!

Mann has hold of Fen's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Fen manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Mann scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Fen tries to hold on but Mann pushes him away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mann postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Fen looks a forlorn figure.
Mann lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Mann scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Fen?
Z Mann has got the better of the ground game so far.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Fen sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Mann tries to pass to full mount but Fen defends it.
Fen is trying to maintain the position but Mann is very close to passing his half guard.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Z Mann showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Fen shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Mann keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Fen.

Fen feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Fen drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Mann dives on top into guard.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Mann connects with a nice short shot to Fen's temple.
Fen has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Mann is working away from the top position though.
Mann is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

Li Fen has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Fen avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Mann.

Fen is looking for a sweep. Mann is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Mann is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Mann is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Fen defends it well.
Mann thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Fen slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Fen working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Mann doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Mann manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Fen is on top in guard.
Fen wants to control from the top but Mann keeps moving.

Mann has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Fen can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Mann. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Mann striking off his back but it's not causing Fen any problems.
Fen pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Mann is keeping the position for now.
Fen is working hard here to advance position.
Fen won't allow Mann to sweep him here.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Fen shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Mann pinned against the cage. Mann gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Fen changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Mann tries to avoid it but Fen manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Mann to the ground. Mann escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Z Mann comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Mann has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
