PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Gill Carver (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Levi Navoakas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Gill Carver!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Levi Navoakas!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Chris Saunders and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Carver enables Navoakas to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Carver manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Carver is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Navoakas presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

Navoakas has picked Carver up - he's going for a ride! Navoakas dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Navoakas thows a huge punch but Carver dodges it nicely.

Carver manages to escape and get back to his feet!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Carver gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Navoakas to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Carver manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Navoakas manages to get himself to full guard.


Navoakas is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Carver defends well.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Carver is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Carver is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Carver pushes down on Navoakas's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Carver is working for a kimura but Navoakas is defending it quite comfortably.

Carver wants to free his trapped foot but Navoakas is holding on for dear life with his legs.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Navoakas is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Carver pulls his head out easily.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Carver lands a nice short elbow.
Carver wants to take a breather but Navoakas is having none of it.
Navoakas is pressing down on Carver's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gill Carver dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Carver feints and as Navoakas raises his hands in defense, Carver changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Navoakas escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Carver gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Navoakas can do anything to dispel that myth.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Carver cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Carver wants to control the pace but Navoakas is squirming around nicely.
Carver is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Navoakas can do to turn this around?

Navoakas is trying desperately to improve position.
Navoakas bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Carver wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Navoakas is now in half guard.

Navoakas seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Navoakas is working Carver over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Carver manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Navoakas manages to get himself to full guard.

That was a close second round but I would say that Gill Carver will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



Carver moves into the clinch.

Navoakas has Carver pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Navoakas pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Carver tumbling to the mat - Navoakas dives into Carver's guard.
Navoakas postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Navoakas accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Carver bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Navoakas's guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Navoakas has his foot on Carver's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Carver works his way back into a safe position though.

Navoakas has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Carver is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Navoakas.

Carver stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Navoakas is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Carver is just riding it out for now. Navoakas eventually gives up the hold.

Navoakas is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Carver still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Carver has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Navoakas has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Carver can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Well Carver has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
