Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Johny Chambers! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Milton Cooper! The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, Eddie Farnsworth and Lou da Vinci.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Chambers moves into the clinch. Cooper will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Chambers up against the cage. Chambers lands a shot to the body. Chambers swings away with an uppercut that misses.
A quick uppercut on the inside from Chambers. Cooper trying to control the position but instead, Chambers has worked for underhooks and has pushed Cooper into the cage. I was talking to Chambers's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight. Chambers doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Chambers lands a takedown into guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Chambers scores with a decent looking elbow strike. Chambers scores with a decent looking elbow strike. Chambers trying to control the position from guard on top but Cooper is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Chambers cracks Cooper with a solid left hand.
That's one minute gone in the round. Chambers is looking to work some ground and pound but Cooper has wrist control. Chambers working some strikes from top position. Chambers throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Cooper works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Chambers scores with a decent looking elbow strike. Chambers postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Chambers loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Chambers wants to control from the top but Cooper keeps moving. Chambers working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Cooper's head.
Cooper is rocked! Cooper wants to get back to his feet but Chambers passes into half guard.
Chambers not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Chambers thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Cooper's head. Chambers throws a strike but Cooper avoids it easily and moves to full guard. Chambers might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Chambers slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Chambers throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Chambers with a flurry of punches that miss. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Chambers controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Cooper wants to stand and escape but Chambers is having none of it. Chambers is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. Cooper is still in real trouble! Can Chambers finish him?
That's three minutes gone in the round. Chambers gets to his feet and stands over Cooper, holding his ankles. He dives in with a big left hand that connects! Cooper felt that one! Chambers unloads more punches and elbows and this one is over! The ref has dived in to save Cooper from any more punishment!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:19 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Johny Chambers! In his post fight interview, Johny Chambers started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
