Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
36 - 16 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gunnar Steigelmann! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
20 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Sebastiaan Rutten! The judges for this bout are , Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Steigelmann throws a combination that misses and Rutten counters with a three punch combo that has Steigelmann backing up. Steigelmann nods at Rutten to acknowledge the strikes. Rutten has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Steigelmann is landing a low percentage of strikes. Steigelmann tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Rutten paws at him with a jab and circles away. Rutten ducks under a wild hook from Steigelmann. Steigelmann misses with a left hand and Rutten counters with a body kick. Rutten avoids the head kick by Steigelmann.
Rutten checks the leg kick. Steigelmann lands with a cross. Steigelmann throws a predictable looking body shot
and Rutten counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
It looks like Gunnar Steigelmann has been cut. Steigelmann clinches. A head punch blocked on the inside by Steigelmann. Steigelmann tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Rutten avoids it. Rutten working aggressively here.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Rutten can't break the clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Steigelmann keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Rutten's efforts to push away. Steigelmann with a knee to the head.
Rutten pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Steigelmann wants to clinch but Rutten slips to the side and Rutten counters with a nice body kick.
Rutten takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
Steigelmann throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd. Rutten checks a leg kick. Rutten counters with a body kick. Rutten takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Rutten throws a big counter head kick but Steigelmann avoids it with no problem. Steigelmann misses with a combination
letting Rutten counter with a right hand. Steigelmann smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button. A head kick from Steigelmann lands but Rutten takes it in his stride.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Steigelmann misses the shot to the body. Rutten throws a big counter head kick but Steigelmann avoids it with no problem. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Rutten lands a big head kick that sends Steigelmann tumbling to the mat! Rutten takes a step backwards and waves Steigelmann back to his feet - he wants the finish! Rutten lands a brutal head kick. Steigelmann looks out on his feet and Rutten throws more strikes until the ref is forced to stop the fight!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:22 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Kick and Punches). Sebastiaan Rutten! Sebastiaan Rutten is the new heavyweight champion! A relieved looking Sebastiaan Rutten thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
