Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jan Paul Valens! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joe Laston! The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Reed Andrews and Dean Styles.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A jab lands there for Laston. Valens takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
It looks like Jan Paul Valens has been cut. Laston has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Valens is landing a low percentage of strikes. Valens looking for a takedown here - he's got it. Valens drops back looking for a leg! Laston is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Laston manages to kick Valens off! Valens jumps back into Laston's guard. Valens stays in close to Laston's body and controls the position. Valens won't allow Laston to get back to his feet. Laston kicks Valens off and gets to his feet. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Valens drives through with a takedown into guard. Laston keeping full guard, as Valens tries to pass. Valens is pushing down on Laston's leg trying to pass to half guard. Laston is fighting to maintain full guard but Valens has managed to sneak the leg through. Valens could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
That's one minute gone in the round. Laston is trying to stand up here but Valens is controlling him well. Valens is looking to take a break and control but Laston is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Valens is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Laston is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Laston is trying to stand back up but Valens is controlling him
Valens throwing shots but Laston is blocking nicely. Valens slips a nice elbow through Laston's hands, connecting with Laston's forehead. Valens works his way into side control. Laston takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Laston is not content to let Valens control the position. Laston is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Valens staying calm. Laston is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Laston is trying to escape the position but Valens is controlling the position. Laston is trying to buck Valens off. Valens in side control lands a decent elbow. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Valens cracks Laston with a big elbow. The strikes coming from Valens are missing the target in this wave of attacks. Valens is looking to take a break and control but Laston is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Valens controls the position from side control. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's four minutes gone in the round. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Laston can do anything to dispel that myth. Valens working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Laston sneaks out the side door and pushes Valens away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape. Laston throws a lazy right hand but Valens sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Valens takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him. Laston fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Laston looks to land a left hand but Valens moved out of range nicely. Valens changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. Left hook, right uppercut from Laston. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Joe Laston dominated that round. The cut man is working on Jan Paul Valens's cut. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Valens drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Valens is putting a hurting on Laston here, landing some big shots from side control. Laston is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Valens is controlling him well. Valens cracks Laston with an elbow. That is naaassty. Valens tries for a kimura but Laston is defending well. Laston is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Valens has just dragged him back down to the mat. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Valens is looking to take a break and control but Laston is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Valens works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head. Jan Paul Valens overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

That's big trouble for Laston! Valens controlling the pace for now. Valens lands a heavy elbow. Laston defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Valens. Valens thowing shots but they're missing. Valens scoring with strikes but Laston is staying in there.

Laston has left one of his arms exposed and Valens doesn't need a second invitation. He's isolated it and locked on a tight armbar. Laston screams and taps out, obviously in a lot of pain. Hopefully there isn't permanent damage to that arm.
