Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Newman Ferguson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kofi Kingston! The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Donatello Bradman and Hugh Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ferguson shoots in but Kingston avoids the takedown attempt easily. Ferguson closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Kingston to the mat! Kingston manages to get full guard. Ferguson drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Ferguson jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Ferguson gets to his feet. Kingston looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Kingston misses with a takedown and Ferguson makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range. Kingston shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Ferguson trying to control but Kingston postures up.
Kingston seems to be working for a kimura but Ferguson defends the submission attempt. Kingston prevents Ferguson from improving his position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ferguson looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Ferguson tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Kingston thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Ferguson's head. Ferguson wants to get back to full guard. Ferguson is not content to let Kingston control the position.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Excellent takedown into side control there by Kingston. Kingston looks gassed! Ferguson is looking to regain half guard here but Kingston keeps moving and retains side control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ferguson manages to work his way to half guard, despite Kingston's best efforts. Ferguson is looking to control Kingston's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Ferguson avoid being mounted? Ferguson won't allow Kingston to pass to mount. Ferguson manages to get to full guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Ferguson manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Kingston is trying desperately to improve position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ferguson working Kingston over with strikes here. Ferguson putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound! Kingston should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Kingston tries to hold on but Ferguson pushes him away. Ferguson moves to take his opponent's back. Kingston looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment. Ferguson is hanging on to Kingston's back as he tries to escape.
Ferguson is working for the choke. I would put my money on him to finish from this position. He's rolled onto his back and has dragged Kingston with him. Kingston is trying to defend but Ferguson has an arm under the chin now! Kingston grimaces and is forced to tap out!
