PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Evan Thomas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Peter Kovalev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Evan Thomas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Peter Kovalev!
The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Mauricio Rocha and Thiago Cunha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kovalev closes the distance and clinches.

Thomas's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Thomas jabbing away but nothing is landing.

Kovalev clinches up with Thomas and pushes him back against the cage.
Thomas tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Kovalev just stands there and leans against the cage.

Kovalev has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Thomas is trying to keep an underhook but Kovalev manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Thomas is not content to let Kovalev control the position.
My spies in Animal House inform me that Kovalev has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
Kovalev throws a strike but Thomas avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Kovalev is looking to work some ground and pound but Thomas has wrist control.
Thomas is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Thomas keeping moving, preventing Kovalev from controlling successfully.

Thomas looking to hit a scissor sweep but Kovalev is one step ahead there.
Kovalev slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Kovalev postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.


It looks like Evan Thomas has been cut.
Kovalev looking to sit in guard and control but Thomas gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Thomas wants to control from the top but Kovalev keeps moving.
Kovalev is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Thomas loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Kovalev wriggles free and stands up.

Kovalev clinches up with Thomas and pushes him back against the cage.
Thomas tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Kovalev smiles and moves away.

Thomas swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Thomas has been working on his boxing with his coaches at AXIS - Rio Gym in the buildup to the fight.
Thomas throws a shot from downtown. Kovalev moves away and avoids it.
Evan Thomas seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Thomas shoots for a takedown but Kovalev saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Evan Thomas. That's going to take a lot out of him.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Kovalev tries to score a body lock takedown but Thomas shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Kovalev has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Thomas uses from the top position.
Kovalev utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Thomas tries to free his leg and advance position but Kovalev is retaining full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Thomas is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Thomas wants to pass the guard but Kovalev is keeping the position.
Kovalev keeping moving, preventing Thomas from controlling successfully.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Kovalev wants to stand up but Thomas is controlling him.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Thomas tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Thomas showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Kovalev.
Thomas throws a shot from downtown. Kovalev moves away and avoids it.
Thomas misses with a right hand

and Kovalev counters with a crisp one two that drops Thomas! Kovalev thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Thomas to his feet! Thomas is in big trouble!

A clash of legs there as Kovalev blocks the low kick.
Thomas keeps the fight on the outside.

It looks like Peter Kovalev has been cut.

Thomas tries to keep at a distance but Kovalev has taken the fight into the clinch.
Kovalev has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Thomas avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Thomas breaks the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Peter Kovalev dominated that round.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Kovalev tries to close the distance and clinch but Thomas swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Kovalev tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Thomas manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Thomas tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Kovalev moves into the clinch successfully.
Thomas is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Kovalev pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Kovalev breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kovalev fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Thomas avoids it really well and circles away.

Thomas throws a low kick but it's checked well by Kovalev.
Thomas throws a sloppy head kick and Kovalev moves out of range easily.
Thomas shoots in but Kovalev avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Kovalev uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Thomas.
Kovalev is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
Kovalev tries to clinch but Thomas is having none of it.

Kovalev has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Kovalev pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Thomas ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Kovalev moves away.
Kovalev lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Thomas shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Thomas misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Kovalev.
Thomas ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Kovalev moves away.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Thomas is defended easily by Kovalev.
As Thomas backs off Kovalev throws a huge counter combo but Thomas manages to avoid it all.

Kovalev rushes Thomas and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Thomas breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Kovalev catches Thomas with a right, a left, a right. It's raining punches and Thomas forgot an umbrella! Another punch and he's down. This one is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:54 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Peter Kovalev!
A determined Peter Kovalev didn't want to dwell on this fight in his post fight interview. Instead he was more keen to state he wants a title shot. Let's see if he gets it!
