Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mike Belfort! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Brandon Spikes! The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, William Peck and Ian Loll.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Belfort closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Belfort working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Belfort landing strikes. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Belfort tries for a kimura but Spikes is defending well. Spikes felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it. Belfort thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Belfort misses with an attempted head punch from side control. Belfort is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Spikes knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Spikes prevents Belfort from moving into mount. Belfort tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
That's one minute gone in the round. Belfort goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Spikes rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Belfort's guard! Nice work there by Spikes! Spikes wants to control from the top but Belfort keeps moving. Belfort controls Spikes momentarily but Spikes frees himself. Belfort working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Spikes doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Spikes manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Spikes avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Spikes wants to get up but he can't break Belfort's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Belfort throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Belfort controlling the position. Spikes is sitting in close to Belfort's body. Belfort has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Spikes is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Spikes is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Belfort.
