Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Park Jeung! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Ivan Johnson! The judges for this bout are Yuuki Gou, Shigeki Sano and Shigeki Fujiwara.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Johnson. Jeung tries to sprawl but Johnson drives through with a takedown into half guard. Jeung is looking to escape. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Jeung is trying to maintain the position but Johnson is very close to passing his half guard. Jeung is trying to stand back up but Johnson is controlling him
Jeung is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Johnson scores with a couple of nice shots. The fighters are battling for position here. Jeung manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Jeung is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Johnson is aware though and is defending well. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Johnson postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Jeung is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Johnson, into his guard. Jeung won't allow Johnson to sweep him here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Johnson keeping moving, preventing Jeung from controlling successfully. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Jeung is looking to work some ground and pound but Johnson has wrist control. Johnson is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Jeung defends well. Johnson escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Jeung gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Johnson working for a triangle but Jeung defends it easily.
Our spies down at at Helsinki Fight Club inform us that Johnson has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off? Johnson looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Jeung is defending well. Johnson quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Jeung has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Johnson celebrates on the ropes, with the crowd.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:29 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Ivan Johnson! In his post fight interview, Ivan Johnson started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
